18 oz of milk a day?

Since introducing solids this week my ds has dropped a bottle, taking him to under 20oz a day (from about 24). I'm worried this is really pushing it for being too little. He's taken a real shine to food instantly and wants to gobble it down, I'm concerned though 1-about so little milk 2-that carrots./ potato etc. have less calories, much less, than formula. He has two half jars of puree, at lunch/ dinner (little birdie made it clear blw could sod off and sat with his mouth open expectantly whenever food was in sight).

I'm no expert, but have heard they should be on a minimum of 20oz milk until 1yo. However I think that includes what they have on cereal, in yougurts and cheese etc, be that cows milk or formula.

My DD (7.5.mths) has also dropped a fair bit of milk and I was worried until I first had her weighed after starting weaning, and her weight gain has remained consistant. Do you know how he's doing on that front? I'd not worry unless his weight gain drops, myself.

His weight gain has been poor, but not weighed him this month. I'll weigh him I guess (been avoiding hv and weight discussions).

He's dairy/ soya allergic so no cheese/ yogurt etc.

just mix a scoop of his formula into whatever you are feeding him and make sure to offer him extra fluids in a freeflow sippy cup with meals.

if he is not keen on water, offer him watered apple juice and then gradually cut back the juice until it is back to plain water.

At six months he can have much more calorie rich food than fruit/veg purée. Meat, chicken, fish, lentils etc. But add his milk to the purees too as already suggested.

My dd at 6.5 months hasn't dropped her milk intake at all - still bf 10 times a day and takes 15-18oz ebm in the 9 hours I'm at work and eats tons via blw. I would love her to cut down a bit on her milk. They're all so different. I think with a minor tweak or two you'll be grand. :)

Well this morning he had his share of our fry up mashed with a bit of milk! Not sure what book that's in...

Out of interest, why a freeflow sippy? I do rather like the valves as they don't leak when thrown/ he sits there like a lemon as it pours out of his mouth! I taught him to use them with the valve off, then put it back on and he's fine sipping. Has tiny amounts of water, but then he's tiny I guess.

I really meant to wean sort of properly at least, but it's quickly turned into feeding him whatever is on the table at random times of day...

strawberry, sorry. i am a bit of a fan of the free flow cups. DD has learned to drink (guzzle) from them and i was talking about them on another thread and i think they leached into my subconscious. i didn't even realise i had written that.

I think i was thinking your little one had never drunk from a cup before and we found that the free flow one was good to start with as the LO didn't have to do anything to get the liquid flowing. When we tried DD with the valve ones she didn't know what do to with them and tried to suckle them like she did her bottle. The free flow cups taught her that water/juice come from the cup and once she got used to the flow of water she learned to control it. She can now do valve or free flow.

strawberrycake · 04/12/2010 22:05

Ah, just wondering if there was a good reason. DS cottoned on to the valve well after a few days where I removed the valve then added it after a oz. With free flow it just tips it in and doesn't swallow, instant puddles.

IMO strawberrycake - you are weaning properly. Who is saying otherwise?

pommedeterre · 05/12/2010 19:39

They say 18-20 oz is the minimum but dd was always a real pickle about milk and I weaned early mainly because of it.
She now takes about 13-16oz a day at 8 months. She eats great though and is very happy/thriving. Crawling, standing, trying to walk. No shortage of energy. I hear lots of people talking about 'food is fun until one' and feel a bit sad BUT she is fine and happy and thriving. I just think that all those 'milk, milk, milk' people could come and have a go at getting it down her and then they'd see :)
So, no real advice other than I have given up worrying about it!

strawberrycake · 07/12/2010 08:27

Well no solids yesterday (point blank refusal and gagging face/ rolling over to avoid) and he had 17oz. Time to stop blaming the solids...

He's just crap at eating I guess.
