At what age is weetabix allowed?

Does anyone know? I can't find a definitive answer in any of the hundreds of books we have and am getting confused!

Also, when can I give cereals with (full fat) cow's milk? (At the mo I am expressing and putting breast milk with them but it's a bit of a faff!)

Thanks a lot!

From memory, though I could be wrong its 6 months. Cows milk from 1 year.

RJandA · 01/12/2010 09:43

Weetabix from 6 months, cow's milk on cereal is also fine from 6 months, and as a main drink from 1 year

iceandlemon · 01/12/2010 09:44

Cows milk is not allowed as a drink until they are 1, but it can be used in cooking and cereal from 6 months.

Seona1973 · 01/12/2010 09:49

weetabix fine from 6 months and as pp have said you can use full fat cows milk on cereal from 6 months but not as a main drink till 1 year.

TortillaDeMaiz · 01/12/2010 09:49

cow's milk is fine on cereals and for cooking from 6 months, not as a main drink.

I gave my DS (almost 8 months) Weetabix for the first time the other day. He seemed to enjoy but TMI he did 8 poos that day! 8!!!!!
I'm giving it a week before I try it again; he didn't seem to have tummy ache but it's hard to tell.

LadyCressida · 01/12/2010 10:08

Lol at the 8 poos! Maybe I'll wait until we have a quiet day before I try it then!

Good news I can use the cow's milk though - is that better for them then putting formula with the cereal?

So hard to know what is best!

Depends what you mean by "better". Tbh, they will only consume a little bit of milk with weetabix so it makes very little difference.

IMO it's better to use cow's milk, as it's cheaper, less faff, more easily available (especially when you're staying at other people's houses) and will get them used to the taste ready to move onto cow's milk as a main drink when they're one (or whenever you decide after that).

Just my opinion though!

If you do use formula, remember to make it with water at 70 degrees then allow it cool, there are some nasty bacteria lurking in powdered formula.

Might sound like a silly question and sorry to hijack your thread OP but...

What is the difference between giving cow's milk with cereal and cow's milk as a drink? Is it simply that the quantity is less? I can't ever envisage giving a baby/child more than one glass of milk tops a day, am I wrong in that? Do they need to drink cow's milk instead of water? Sorry is this seems clueless it's just I never drink milk so it seems odd to give it to a baby as a drink....am I supposed to?

Thanks!

colditz · 02/12/2010 09:20

A 1 year old baby, if not breastfed, will need a minimum of 12 oz of cows milk a day, which is 2 adult sized glasses, or nearly 3/4 pint.

Seona1973 · 02/12/2010 09:46

or if they dont drink much milk they can get the same nutrients through other dairy products e.g. cheese, yoghurt, milk in food and with cereals

ThatllDoPig · 02/12/2010 09:48

Mine had weetabix from 6 months, with cows milk. Heat it a little bit in microwave in the cold weather.

ThatllDoPig · 02/12/2010 09:49

Ready brek is brill too. Really pure ingredients and much cheaper than the baby porridge you can buy.

Guacamohohohole · 02/12/2010 09:54

We had Ready Brek this morning for the first time and that was a huge hit with DS, much nicer than Weetabix. I had some too (although I put loads of sugar on mine Xmas Blush) it was delicious!

belindarose · 02/12/2010 10:55

Weetabix invariably leads to massive poo explosions for my DD (15 mo). I only ever give it to her if I know we can stay around the house for a few hours! How about ordinary porridge? Much cheaper than ready brek or similar. I try to make sure DD gets a variety of grains/ carbs, so giving oats at breakfast reduces the amount of wheat she gets during the day.

LadyCressida · 02/12/2010 19:34

Well we tried the whole milk with baby cereal this morning and it wasn't entirely successful - she wasn't at all keen and only ate half!

I didn't think to heat it up though and it was probably really cold compared with my milk so I will give that a go tomorrow!

DS is 11 months and has been having Weetabix for months since totally going off porridge.

You can use cows milk in cooking and for breakfast at any time, but not as a main drink until 12 months.

I want to try Ready Brek because I think oats are better than wheat. Can anyone let me know how to prepare a tiny quantity, how long to cook it for and whether to add anything to it. I'm reluctant to add sugar.

mylifewithstrangers · 07/12/2010 14:50

I mix a couple of tablespoons of ready brek with similar of cows milk. bung in micro for 30 seconds. mash in a bit of banana and a couple of teaspoons of greek yoghurt. ds loves it this way (is less impressed without the banana and yog)

zebedeethezebra · 07/12/2010 14:54

Cool! Thanks my life

thislittlesisterlola · 08/12/2010 13:53

On the question of milk can I can 6 month ds goat's milk full fat? We don't have cows milk.
I would assume its ok but there is a tiny seed of doubt. ( Would give cows cheese and yogurt just not milk so I'm not eliminating cow as it were unless he reacts)

Seona1973 · 08/12/2010 15:19

yes you can use goats milk with cereal and in cooking, etc from 6 months as long as he still has breast/formula milk as the main drink

thislittlesisterlola · 08/12/2010 19:45

Great thank you. I thought as much but did have a wobble.
