Evidence basis for BLW?

I had a v interesting conversation with a HCP today who is going to be running a parenting course for mums of babies 3m+.

Amongst other things, starting will be covered. I asked if BLW would be mentioned and she said no because as a HCP she can only talk about things with an evidence/research basis.

As the British Dietetic Society have produced a chart to show you what foods/texture and when that's all she is allowed to recommend. Plus the WHO only recommends pureesHmm.

Is there any research/studies/evidence base for BLW or has Gill Rapley just pulled BLW out of her arseConfused Not that I think that you understand as stick blenders were very rare in the Iron age so what did early man do til the 90's?

funnily enough when my dds were teething they really liked steak etc. i always presumed they were helping their teeth come through.

wrt recommendations i wonder if the nhs just can't be arsed promoting another method, iykwim? it does basically promote self-feeding after 6 mos, as it is. the problem is that of course HVs who are used to promoting purees aren't willing to make that gear-change.

Just another one to add that my HV was very interested when I mentioned to her that we were BLW (arising from a conversation at 24 weeks - "you must start giving him protein now" and followed a disagreement that 24 weeks is not 6 months, and DS2 wasn't that bothered by food at that point anyway, but anyway, I digress!)

She appeared to know nothing about BLW, but said she was keen to speak to me in a couple of months to see how it is going. I got the impression that I was the first she'd spoken to who has gone down this route (or at least admitted it Grin).

DS2 is now 8 months and eats pretty much anything and everything (although not too keen on parsnips, can't say I blame him really!). He even attempted a mini-corn on the cob the other day. Granted I'm not sure he got many corns off, but he loved trying. He still isn't great with grilled meat, so at the moment, I tend to casserole meat a couple of times a week.

Love love love the fact we can all eat our meal at the same time and I can invest my time in cooking one decent meal, rather than mashing and pureeing it up.

Love it. Apologies for waffling on!
