Tell me about BLW/finger food

DS, 9 months, has decided to give up on purees and soups. Things he used to eat quite happily a month ago now result in tightly pursed lips, thrashing around on the highchair and angry cries of "NNNN!".

He will only have yoghurt, ricotta, semolina, porridge, mashed banana or fruit (from pots). However, he munches very happily on bread, biscuits or spaghetti. We have therefore thought about offering other finger food, but are concerned at the choking risk posed by some foods (eg apple, raisins, grapes). Does the BLW book address this? Is it worth buying? And, if your DC has been through a similar phase, what would you suggest, please?

hello, we started on puree and at about 10 months my little miss started refusing them, I think on the basis that she couldn't feed herself, though now she will attempt to lever a spoon into her mouth and back into the bowl.
I think the BLW book IS good but I just copied other mums, in that I steamed apple, carrots and broccolli and took the skin off cucumbers so they crumbled when gummed/chewed and didn't cause a choking hazard. You can also buy baby safe feeder but I thought they looked like just one more thing to wash up Wink www.johnlewis.com/230490322/Product.aspx?source=14798
Also, I was paranoid about things like blueberries and berries in general but my SiL gave her two them without any problems, and I have discovered that DD laps them up and has never choked. Raspberries and blueberries are particularly popular. But that is up to you.
Looking at your DS's intake, if you can introduce a bit more veg you should have a pretty good diet going there!
One more thing DD loves - skinned new potatoes with a bit of butter. If you overcook them over so lightly, the skin just peels off. Silent, happy, messy eating ensues.

Yes buy the BLW book!

I wouldn't worry too much about choking, raisins and nuts are easy to steer clear of and 'hard' fruit like apples can be steamed to make a bit softer, I cut into rings and steam quickly in microwave.
If you cut things like raspberries and olives into halves they are unlikely to choke. At 9 months AFAIK they are good with pincer grip so can pick up smaller bits. My DS is able to pick up tiny bits of broccoli and get them in his mouth (he is 8 mo)

You can also bake raisins into things like banana bread which makes them softer and easier to eat.

If you are looking for ideas I recommend the BLW website and Aitch's blog.
