Ok, I admit I am the spawn of the devil - but - BSE in baby food jars?

This is what my HV told me I was risking my DS with today for not cooking for him 100% (he has about 50/50, I work 2/3 time - ie not quite part, not quite full -time) and atm with summery food this is the best I feel I can manage. I do at least once a week spag bol, a roast, or make him a one pan fish pie. However, as we are both shift workers I don't cook everynight, DP dosen't cook when I am not here. I find it hard (violins out please)

Then to be told that I am risking my child. I said I used organic, and she just kind of shrugged her shoulders as that makes no odds, and yet I'm sure there have been no incidences of BSE in organic beef, have there? Why do they always have to have this holier than thou attitude? Grrr....

DS1 is doomed! The only food he would eat for months was boots organic steak risotto. Thankfully, he is now 8 and shows no signs of being barking (mooing) mad.

I like the advice that suggests you ignore all health visitors? advice. I always did.

This is going to sound naf but how could you be sure that the beef you buy is any better than what is in the jarsÉ

I was shocked when I returned to Canada and discovered that I am no longer able to donate blood because I was in the UK for more than 6 months and that means I am at risk for BSE.

I do know that in humans it is CJD... Sorry just posted quickly as all three children are at my ankles.

my ds had a jar of savoury every day and a jar of sweet everyday until he was about one. Not all the jars were organic and he's fine. Ignore, ignore, ignore

I'm a veggie, but cook my DD spagetti bolognese. I buy beef from my local organic farm. I never gave her jars with beef/red meat or chicken in because I didn't feel confident that good quality cuts of meat would be in these jars. Instead I used to buy the veggie meals as standbys.

I understand there are strict controls regarding baby food - however, I am unsure how stringent the rules are for the producers supplying the goods. ie where does the beef come from ? to my knowledge there is no labelling on the jars ?

If you are still concerned, perhaps you could buy your own organic beef from reputable farm/butcher, cook a massive batch at the weekend & freeze into small portions ?

Flossam, I too think your HV is barking, but you can if you want, make gallons of baby bolognese with organic ingredients very cheaply if you have somewhere to freeze it!
