BLW: is the book useful?

We (sort of) BLW ds1 (no purees, gave him our food, did help him by holding the spoon for sloppy food, but no force feeding). Now he is a very fussy toddler.

I suspect he would have been fussy however he was weaned, and plan a similar approach this time, but just in case, is there any reason that we might be more successful if we read Rapley's book?

Dd1 is very fussy despite being BLWed. She is actually in the book! Haven't actually read it though Blush

GingerCursedEeeee · 01/11/2010 14:02

It is brilliant, and free postage from amazon so only costs you about £6.50.

simplysurreal · 01/11/2010 14:03

I didn't find it particularly useful as most of the info can be found on the internet. Mind you I bought the book when DS1 was older and it wasn't really relevant. The book is quite interesting though.

DS1 was BLW and is a fussy toddler. I think it's the way he is, he's stubborn about most things ... it's in the genes!

BonfieryFlisspaps · 01/11/2010 14:04

I found the book helpful just for some basic guidance and DD has taken to everything we've fed her, but then she is only 7mo and could well turn out to be a fussy eater later.

It won't hurt to have a read though, although I'd recommend getting it out of the library rather than buying it.

Also Aitch's site/blog has been very helpful.

happygilmore · 01/11/2010 14:42

I found the book useful but just got it from the library.

Bumperlicious · 01/11/2010 16:42

There's a recipe book coming out soon

muslimah28 · 01/11/2010 18:27

I got it from the library too.

MamaChris · 01/11/2010 21:10

I don't think our library has a copy :(

But the recipe book sounds good. I thought you just gave them same food everyone else eats, presented so they can use fingers. Are you supposed to cook separate meals then?

Well that is generally the idea but that wouldn't make any money would it?Grin

I guess some meals may not be blw friendly, plus I'm always stuck for interesting brekkie & lunch ideas.

Is no-one going to ask about my dd in the book?Grin

MamaChris · 01/11/2010 21:32

I wanted to ask bumper, but then you said you'd never read it! How did she get in the book? What's she eating?

Bumper, tell us about your daughter in the book Wink

Mama - DD just has what we're eating but generally in strip or chunk form. Not tried anything like bolognese with her as she's not got the pincer grip yet, although I suppose we could go for the loaded spoon approach as she's very good at getting a spoon to her mouth. And rather than adapt our meals to suit her, I seem to be making things for her and adapting them for us instead. Good for everyone really as it means we're all trying new things and it's generally healthier.

Bumperlicious · 01/11/2010 21:43

Not read it but have a copy to show off to people. She is in the photos, 6th page i think showing off her pincer grip.

My local bf counsellor knows gill rapely & knew we were doing blw & that gill wanted photos. Was v exciting. We were invited to the book launch but couldn't make it.

BraveGirl · 03/11/2010 11:15

My copy arrived yesterday (DS is almost 5 months). I have read chapters 1 and 2, but it has helped me to understand the principles behind BLW already, so I can defend my corner to the MIL!

GuyFawkesIsMyLoveSlave · 03/11/2010 11:27

The book is more useful for waving at other people (grandparents, nurseries, childminders etc.) than for you and your baby directly, IMO. Will have to have a flick through and watch out for Bumper's DD now...

napa · 03/11/2010 16:22

The recipe book is out now (got my copy yesterday). As well as recipes there is a section all about the blw principles as well as do's and don't's. Recipes are going to be good for inspiration when i get a but stuck!!

MamaChris · 03/11/2010 16:30

it sounds like the recipe book might be a better idea, if it covers principles of blw too. are they recipes for things you'd eat yourself (unlike the puree books) or are they things like "how to steam a broccoli spear"?

Milkshare · 03/11/2010 16:38

I did BLW with my son before we'd even heard of the book. I did buy it this time round and I have to say it had some fantastic suggestions!

napa · 03/11/2010 20:31

There's breakfast ideas and this like the porridge pancake recipe, recipes for snack type lunches and meals like lamb tagine, risottos and curries. I think the idea is meals that you and baby can eat as a family.

muslimah28 · 03/11/2010 22:02

bumperlicious we went to the library today to return our copy, had a quick look for your dd before we did, so cute!!

LovingKent · 04/11/2010 14:23

I found it quite useful especially for the bit after the initial stages e.g. it has suggestions of suitable snack foods, a problem solving section but got most of the basic ideas off mumsnet Grin. See if you can get it out of the library? Or borrow off a friend?

pigleychez · 04/11/2010 18:15

We bought the book when BLW DD1. I found the book really helped make sense of it all and the reasoning behind it.

My boohooing mother was offered to read it but refused Hmm She eats her words now when DD is perfect to take out and a great eater.

My copy has done the rounds to lots of friends in the past 2 yrs and many friends have been converted to the Baby led way.
Im about to re-read it now for DD2 whos approaching 6mths to refresh my memory. Ill keep a look out for your DD Bumper :)

Bumperlicious · 04/11/2010 20:51

Thanks muslimah28 :)

MamaChris · 05/11/2010 08:41

There are 3 copies in our county libraries. I've reserved a copy :) (and will look for your dd when I get it bumper)
