8mo allergic reaction scrambled egg

Can anyone advise if after an allergic reaction, I should wait a while and re-try? Or, is it a case of not trying again as there will always be an allergy?

DS1 had his first taste of scrambled egg and after a few spoonfuls was sick, and then his chin area became red, after a few hours it calmed down and disappeared.

Def take to GP first, egg allergy can get worse with every exposure.

indigobarbie · 29/10/2010 23:11

Thanks MegBusset, Think I will get an appointment on to discuss, just realising (stupidly) that many things contain egg and DS probably hasn't been exposed to those yet either....
Thanks everyone

Have just been to the GP for exactly that reason! First few times we gave egg were fine, then DD's chein went red, eczma got worse etc. tried again as wasn't sure if it was the egg and smae thing happened. the Gpo said those are classic allergy symptoms, and has referred us to hsopital for testing, and said in the meanime no egg.

The good news is that the majority of children grow out of egg allergy, so fingers crossed! My friends 3 year old has been allergic (never even had them but went in for testing for dairy allergy, they tested egg at the same time and said the reaction was quite severe, so advised not to give them). She has just been retested and given the go ahead to eat egg.

Hi CatL thanks for that info, I will def put an appointment on to get him checked out. Thank you :)

CatL that's interesting as my dd has egg allergy and when I asked my GP about testing he said there was no point as it was obviously egg allergy. I am basically avoiding all egg in her diet.

He also said that most babies grow out of it and to try her again on a tiny bit of egg when dd is about 15 months and have piriton on standby.

Some doctors must refer easier than others! I think our was a fairly young doctor, so perhaps inexperience makes her a bit cautious about these things.

indigobarbie · 01/11/2010 21:06

blacktea does this mean checking the labels for things and avoiding everything which might contain egg? I noticed that one of the jars which I gave DS did contain egg, but he seemed ok, so I'm not sure. It is better to be safe though, so maybe avoidance is best.

Indigo, I make most of dd's food but do check labels of the odd things that I give her to be on the safe side. My Dr said that the allergy was more for whole egg which is why she had a reaction to scrambled egg. He seemed to think she'd be ok with egg in foods but I don't really want to take the risk. Having said that if you were to get a test it would test between whole egg and egg in food. Sorry for lack of paragraphs, dd has done something to the return key and it now opens the media player.

My DS was allergic to egg when a baby (made him vomit). But seemed to be OK with egg in things like cake. Tried it again when he was 2 and he was fine, now loves eggs. Yes, I think it's common for children to grow out of this one.

Hi Indigo,
my dd is 20 months, last week she had an allergy test at the hospital for egg and it confirmed what we already knew- she is indeed allergic.
When she was about 8 months she had scrambled egg and had a reaction exactly as you describe, and I tried again at 12 months and the same thing happened. This then happened again at about 14 months with cake mix (raw, licking the bowl). That was when we went to the GP, as dd was also having an occasional reaction to her own wee (hives over her bottom) and we didn't know what was causing it. We were referred straight away for testing but the appointment was only last week.
At the hospital they confirmed the egg allergy and advised to cut it out entirely in pure form (obviously we had already done this!), but also said to watch out for egg derivatives (sp?) in foods when she has the other reaction in case there is one in particular setting her off. They have not advised a total ban on all foods containing egg (sensible as we know she is fine with most things). They also said they will retest annually but she should grow out of it by the time she is five. HTH
