Weaning baby with eczema?

My DS is nearly six months old (I forget what he is in weeks Blush - he's my first baby) and so I'm starting to think about weaning soon. He's showing interest when we eat, can sit up when he's supported and for about 30 seconds unsupported, plus a few other signs.

He has eczema, which is controlled at the moment by a regime of mild steroid creams every few weeks and a variety of emollients. My health visitor gave me an excellent booklet on eczema, which had some interesting advice on what foods not to give due to the increased risk of causing allergies (because of the eczema). Things like eggs, yoghurt and cheese are out until he's over 12mths, for example.

I was just wondering what other people have done with their DCs with eczema? I'm interested in hearing your experiences.

Hi bubblebobble my DS has eczema too and was 'diagnosed' at around 4 months old. I have to say that it has improved dramatically as he has got older (now 2 1/2!)

He was my second child and first DC had fab skin and no eczema in sight. I followed the same weaning path as I did with first child. I introduced things one at a time and tried them for a few days (to allow time for any reaction to show up). i left the more 'allergic' foods until he was over 6 months. Have you looked on The British eczema society website as this has useful tips too.

Personally I gave him yoghurt etc at a young age and had no ill effects but am aware that this is not always true.

Good luck

Hi, my DS (now 16m) had his first eczema breakout at around 5m, still exclusively breastfed, so it was very important to me not to feed him the wrong foods, knowing there are common triggers as you say.

We started with rice, most fruit and veg, and avoided gluten (oats, wheat etc) for a few months as well as eggs, tomatoes and strawberries. He had the last 3 foods at around 1 year (a painful wait but worth it! :)

We found out as we went that certain foods trigger eczema attacks these must be particular to the child as they weren't all listed in foods to avoid for us kiwi, pineapple and sesame are off limits. But we found that out having him try a bit and noticing a reaction. Introduce new foods slowly (e.g. once a week) so that you can keep track of what has caused a reaction if it happens.

We didn't avoid any dairy products (nor was this recommended to us) though of course if he'd reacted to them we would have cut them out too!
