BLW a prem baby?

This may be an old chesnut...please forgive me if so!

DD was born a month early, although you certainly could not tell now, since she is 91st centile for weight and hitting (non adjusted) milestones just fine. I BLW my older boys (well, DS2 just started swiping food off my plate) typically at around the 5.5 month mark, because they were so obviously interested and ready.

On the one hand I am reluctant to start DD at this stage, since technically her little guts are only 4 months old. On the other, she is well capable of sitting up, with a little support, in an appropriate chair, her grasp is adequate for getting stuck in and she is giving 'tractor beam' glares whenever she sees anyone eating - trying to pull the food in through sheer will power.

So my question is how much longer should I wait? Shall I torture her a little longer and make her wait until she turns 6 months? I haven't had her weighed recently, but she's not showing signs of hunger that breastfeeding isn't satisfying...so no clue there, I'm afraid.

She's currently savaging a muslin. Keen to try her gums out, but no judgement, you see Wink

My DS was born 10 weeks early yet i was told to wean him 6 months after he was born not due. Therefore he was really only 3 1/2 months! As a result he had tiny amounts of purees for a couple of months then he went onto BLW, which he much preferred.

hope this helps

That's interesting, Mrspear, did he take to it?

Hmm I would like the answer to this, as my DD is now 5 months, but was 3.5 weeks early.

My DS, who is now 11, was 8 weeks early, and with him I waited until he was 4 months from due date (this was back in the day when 4 months was advised) - so he was 6 months actual.

I don't remember much about how he took to it, but I think well - he hasn't stopped since Grin. But it wasn't obviously too early or too late for him.

My son was born 6 weeks premature and I started BLW at 5.5/6months actual with no problems at all, just took it v slowly.

Hmmm, sounds like health professionals aren't too precious about adjusting for due dates with diet, then?

On balance, I think I'll give it a couple of weeks more so her grasp is really competent, and then go for it. We've no history of food allergies in the family (unless you count her father's morbid fear of mushrooms Grin) so we'd have to be quite unlucky for it to have lasting side effects.
