hi, my DD 2 is 20 weeks and showing loads of signs of wanting food- never been a good feeder Bf or ff very fussy and dropped a line on red book too, so hv advised indroducing puree fruit and veg but nothing with wheat or gluten in

i weaned my DD1 at 4 months as those were the guidlines at the time and shes great with food no allegies etc

ive had alot of friends or heard people chatting about waiting till 6 months and struggling as DC not interested anymore but showed signs before

What's your experiences with weaning your DC's? and when did you do it?

Same as you, took her lead & weaned DD at 4 months, mashed Banana, followed by single sweet potato, carrot etc etc, no wheat of gluten for her first year, I used to make cheese sauce with breast milk for brocoli cheese etc, & I froze plenty for after BF ended at 10 months
she is really good with food, varied tastes & never been a fussy eater....she does have some food intolerance though, but that came later after antibiotics, & food chemical sensitivities came earlier hrough breast milk when only tiny

I personally can't stand the tooing & froing with guidelines, talk about how to confuse new mums Hmm, but they are only guidelines after all, not 1 rule fits all & you need to follow your instinct & your DCs lead

dd was weaned at 16 weeks as per the guidelines at the time - in hindsight she wasnt really ready for it. I waited till ds was 23 weeks before starting and gave finger foods fairly quickly as dd had issues with lumps till she was about 1 year old and I didnt want the same issues with ds.

thanks for the replies, yes it is so confusing always changing! im glad the hv said to start as well as sometimes they can be so strict.

ive already pureed and froze some apple and pear (seperate) so i'll get started! :)

I weaned DD1 - (big baby) at 26 weeks, DD2 smaller at 28weeks. Neither was desperate for food - I kept "Food is fun until they're1" as my mantra

Hate to be the point of dissent but if she is hungry filling her up with fruit which is high volume for low calories & will decrease the amount of dense calorie milk she is taking is not the answer. Upping her milk is the answer, which means feeding more often.

harley85 · 22/10/2010 10:48

shes not a good feeder- she won't take more milk from breast or botttle ive tried that already before i asked for help,

i also asked about hungry baby formula but aparently that has the same amount of calories as normal formula but will just fill her for longer

shall i sterilise bowls and spoons etc?

25 or 26 weeks with both DC (now 16 months and nearly 30).

Foods that can be given before six months are significantly less calorie dense than milk.

ds1 was about 4 months ds2 was older but then was tubed feed lots of medical issues etc but he still started about 7 mths. if he was like ds1 then i 2 would of taken his lead

FerminaUrbinoDaza · 22/10/2010 16:25

Erm, sorry DD is nearly 3 not 30...
