Hello all,

My DD has taken to the taste of jarred baby food which is not what I intended. I have used them as have been away for a few days. She has always been a sweet toothed little one and I was shocked at how enthusiastic she was over eating the savoury jarred food. Now at home we are back on my homemade stuff...the usual beef and sweet potatoes, bolognaise, fish pie etc.. and she isn't half as interested..anyone else had simliar problems?? What is it that the jars have that my food doesn't? I wondered if it was the texture as I include a lot of potatoe/carbs textured veg in my stuff? What can I mix potatoes with to stop the paste like texture.......apologies for all the questions..

Not sure of age of your DD but I read not to whizz the potatoes as they go gluey/slimey as the starch breaks down too much. (you probably aren't whizzing them anyway.

When my two went through the stage of preferring jars, I'd give them the jar stuff with some of my stuff added in as well, so say if it was chicken casserole, I might add some cheesy mash pots as well to boost it up a bit. I think jars are very easy for them eat and they don't have to work hard.

I also used the jars to add as a sauce to pasta for them as the mince beef I used was way too chewy and hard to get down for them compared to what's in the spag bol jars.

If you mash pots or fish in with jar stuff, that's nice too (yes, I've tried them all myself Grin)

I'm just going through this too. dd (9mo) was blw but since she's become good enough at eating to eat out or at friends houses I've used a few jars and now she's not interested in anything else. Or she'll lose interest very quickly and then I'll give her a jar. I guess I need to stop giving in.

I think the jars are easier to eat too. I like the idea of mixing stuff with them. I do think that nowadays you can get pretty good jar or tube food like ella's organics which don't have any added salt or sugar. So whilst its expensive, its probably not doing any harm.

My son was like this, I thought he'll never eat proper family meals or lumpy food ever. He had a sweet tooth and would baulk if i tried to put anythind he'd have to chew near his mouth but I can safely say it isn't anything to do with your cooking or you doing anything wrong. My son ate home cooked meals when he decided to and he's been a very healthy lad and grown strong ever since

Thanks for all replies. Glad my LO(7months) is not the only one. I like the idea of mixing my own food with jars. That may work. HOwever, yesterday I mixed a bit of milk with homecooked food. It made the potatoes a bit runnier so I am thinking it is a texture thing rather than a taste thing.I think I will continue trying to give her textured food though as I guess she needs to learn(has been weaned for two months already). However i tried her with cut up pasta the other day to see if I could include non- paste like carbs, and she was not impressed...spat it all out(maybe it just wasn't a jar :))

Anyway cheers to all

Both of mine used to throw up with pasta. They'd eat it and then an hour later, just the pasta would come back up :)
