Weaning making sleep worse

Agggh,ds had awful colic for the first 5months of his life, only three trips to the osteo and some gaviscon helped in the end. At 5months it got better though, waking once or twice a night, I co-sleep so very manageable indeed. He was 6wks prem so waited to 6months to wean, wanted to do BLW but he's not there yet.
He has fruit purees: banana, apple, strawberry, he has yoghurt. He's only on one or two meals a day mid morning and afternoon.
He is now awake for half the night again and going for one - two hours tops. It's making him windy and pretty colicky of a night and I feel like we're back to square one again.
It's the wind that's waking him. He takes hours to work on a nappy and then explodes.
What should I do? What am I doing wrong? I'm so so tired Confused

I think I'd be inclined to go back to milk, and wait until he is ready for BLW. But I'm in no way an expert and I believe that BLW is possibly not advised for premature babies anyway? I'm not sure enough to say yeah go for it.

But my general feeling if the food seems to be upsetting your child's digestion would be to leave it for a few more weeks. Food is just for exploration in the beginning, the bulk of their nutrition should come from milk, so it won't do any harm to hold off for a bit.

Thanks, yesterday he just had breast milk. The thing is he does want to eat, if he sees me eating he shouts and gets frustrated, opens his mouth etc. But he can't hold things and brin them to his mouth yet so if I give him food he just throws it on the floor and gets even more frustrated.
I'm justreally confused, I've asked the mums I know if the did one milk day, one day with one meal etc but everyone else got on fine.
Do you think if he's scrunching food up but not getting it to his mouth yet that he'll be ready soon?

Possibly - I know DS was fascinated just squishing the food around for a while, he did try to get it to his mouth, but I guess the more you let him play with it the more likely some is to go in.

I don't think that he could know you are eating the food at the moment, because I don't know whether babies of 5/6 months make the connection between you having a mouth and them having one, if that makes sense. I think at the start they just want to explore everything, it's just that at that age they explore everything with their mouths, hands are just a means of getting things there Grin so he is going to try and put it in, but it doesn't mean he would necessarily be frustrated that he can't, he might just be frustrated/confused that it didn't do what he expected. It's all a learning experience.

What is his highchair like, is the tray low down near his tummy or is it higher, almost in his armpits? I think too high a tray can make it difficult for them.

ItWasADarkAndStormyNight · 16/10/2010 12:03

Interesting. Dm said he was getting frustrated, he can't pick up food, if you put some in his hand he'll scrunch his fist tight and hold it but won't put it in him mouth. I've tried guiding it to his mouth and he'll then suck it but once I take my hand away he'll drop it.
He isn't at the stage of putting it in his mouth himself as he's can't pick it up. His hands are in his mouth all the time though.
If I'm eating and he's on my lap he'll shout and open his mouth, or bang on the plate but because he can't pick it up he just bangs and gets angry Confused
High chair table is high near his armpits, he can't sit up so kind of slouches in it so I've taken to feeding him in his banana stained bouncy chair.

Hmm, my 29 week old had silent reflux (ie heart burn without being sick) for 5 months. He hated every puree I tried him on when I started, so have now started BLW with much more success - although he is still taking to it v slowly. Interestingly (annoyingly), we have the same issue re sleep - he is waking every hour through the night now. It's killing me. I can't help but think digestive problems early on (colic, reflux) could be the cause...

Also, you mention feeding strawberries and bananas. Annabel Karmel notes that some babies can be allergic to berries so I have put off trying these until a later date. Bananas (and rice) can both cause constipation (we had to avoid them with DS1 for about a year) so would be worth cutting out. A friend's osteo also suggested leaving tomatoes until weaning is well established when a baby has had colic. Good luck!

ItWasADarkAndStormyNight · 18/10/2010 19:54

That's really interesting pea do you know what foods are tolerated?

No idea! The other food I have remembered caused constipation in DS1 is egg.

We have just restricted DS2's food intake to simple veg and fruit only (lightly steamed apples, ripe pear, steamed butternut squash, steamed courgette) for the last 2 days to see if he can digest those more easily. [We had previously been giving him rice cakes, toast etc as he would only eat anything v bland initially.] Last night he slept without interruption until 5.30 am (bliss after the last week or two) so I am hoping that we will have similar luck tonight... I will let you know.

peasizedbladder · 21/10/2010 20:54

I've checked with my friend - her cranial osteopath recommended not giving either tomato or banana until weaning is well established if a baby has suffered from colic.

We have limited food intake to simple fruit and veg for three days now - and have had three nights sleep :o) bliss. Are you having any more luck Dark and Stormy?

ItWasADarkAndStormyNight · 21/10/2010 21:45

Thanks Pea! Awful night last night, his Dad gave him some tomato yesterday so that makes sense! It's a shame about the bananas but I'm going to stay off both as the colic has returned with a vengeance.
He's just had carrots and mashed potato today so hopefully a better night, only awake two or three times not most of the night would do me [hgrin]
I'll do what you're doing I think, keep it simple and take it slow, it's encouraging to hear the sleepings improved, I need my sleep!

hope his dad got up throught the night then ;o)

LaTristesse · 22/10/2010 07:01

I'm having the same trouble - DS now 7.5mo, waited until 6 mo to start as he was also colicky and had silent reflux earlier on.

He's struggling terribly with wind and poo, waking hourly because of it - and he's been like this since we started. I am VERY tired.

Our HV recommended a little prune juice in warm water to clear it, which does seem to work, but then we're back to square one as soon as he eats again. On days when he's really suffering he won't touch his solids (we do a mix of purees and finger food), and even goes off breast milk.

I didn't know whether this would just settle itself down eventually as he gets more used to processing food, or whether he needs some help. My GP is utterly rubbish when it comes to babies, so I've been looking into herbal alternative therapies...

It's nice to know we're not the only ones going through this.

sleepwhenidie · 22/10/2010 07:17

My DS was similar, it just took a while - a few weeks - to settle down after starting solids.

WRT herbal remedies, Ashton&Parsons teething powders claim to settle little tummies, may be worth a try?

ItWasADarkAndStormyNight · 22/10/2010 10:13

I'll have to see if I can get some of that Ashton&Parsons then, if anyone knows any other herbal remedies can you let me know? I am SO tired.
Ds only had carrots yesterday and still had an awful night, we're a few weeks into weaning now so I'm starting to think this isn't going to settle itself, pretty disheartend

Though hopefully it's the last of whatevers upsetting him leaving the system.
