Scared baby will choke and how much food to give??

Am i being silly?

My 8 month old DD is currently doing really well (i think!) weaning.
On stage 2 foods in jars and will have whole 190g jar and 1/2 same size jar of pudding for lunch and then another jar and a yoghurt with mashed fruit for tea. She has 5oz milk and porridge for bfast. But i am scared of trying bigger things like toast, piece of cheese or sticks of things in case big bits break off and she will choke.

How long to stay on stage 2 and move up?

Also is this ok or should i feed her more?

I have been lucky that she has not refused any food i give her and always watches with interest in whatever i am eating.

(I would like to give her more home made stuff, i try when what i eat is suitable but i am too tired because she does not sleep through, wakes a lot, same during the day and banging about in the kitchen does wake her up. We live in a maisonnette. Her sleep and my mental health are whole different issues!!)

When you feed her more solid stuff she WILL gag - be prepared for this! But she is very unlikely to choke - she'll spit out whatever's making her gag. How much milk is she having?

Hi lal, Not loads. 5oz before porridge and 5oz in afternoon(sometimes refuses this) and 5oz before bed. She is gaining weight about 4oz a week. She is active and crawling.

I have tried experimenting on a biscotti thing but my nerves couldnt hack it! Ended up taking it off her just giving her very small lumps.

She has only one bottom tooth just starting to appear.

I know it's scary at first but honestly she will be fine.

Try some roast veg first, like butternut squash, sweet potato, courgette etc, they go so soft that there really isn't anything to choke on. That will get her used to putting things in her mouth and chewing a bit, then move on to toast with loads of butter, rice cakes, steamed veg, bits of fruit etc.

At first I used to soak the rice cakes in milk to soften them up, that helped her at the beginning.

At the beginning we also did banana or avacado mashed straight onto her tray, she could pick up big sloppy handfuls and smear them all over herself, but some definitely went in!

And they don't need teeth so don't worry about that. She'll probably surprise you with what she can manage with a bit of practice - mine does.

Have fun, and get ready for a big mess! Oh - and here's the tricky bit - if she does start to gag a little, just give her a a few seconds before you start whacking her on the back, she'll almost certainly manage to spit out whatever it is causing the problem. But just to be on the safe side, make sure you know what to do if she does really choke (VERY unlikely though).

Good luck
