Is it ok to give my 8mth old Petit Filous yoghurts?

I have just been terrified by a chat from a dental expert about hidden sugar in foods - especially about how awful anything made using concentrated fruit juice is. Does anyone know if PF yoghurts are ok or should I only give my LO yoghurt mixted with home made fruit puree?

They are quite high in sugar. IIRC the own brand fromage frais are slightly better, but you'd have to check this. I think I stuck to greek yog + fruit puree (or just plain yoghurt) until DS was about 10 months old. Now I use the little pots as they are easier.

Try the Yeo Valley Organic Yoghurts for kids, nothing nasty in them at all and they come in little pots like PF.

MrsCurly · 01/10/2010 21:16

Plain yoghurt and fruit. Yeo valley plain yoghurt is yummy. My kids still eat this several times a week and oldest is 7.

Stangirl · 01/10/2010 22:24

Thank you. I take it that it won't be the end of the world to give my LO the remaining 5 pots of PF - I can't afford to throw food away. I never get round to pureeing anything - so Yeo Valley it is.

Nah, wouldn't be the end of the world at all! I would definitely look at the own brand ones though. Just check the ingredients and compare them to the petits filous/yeo valley etc. I've never bought the YV ones but I bet they are expensive.

Liz79 · 02/10/2010 21:46

can you get plain yog in little pots?

HopHopALady · 04/10/2010 14:11

I had this guilt trip about DD when she was being weaned. Didn't think anything about Petit Filous until SIL said she didn't give hers any until they were one. Then felt terrible! Started buying organic greek yoghurt and adding fruit purees to it and then progressed back to shop bought fromage frais when she got a bit older.

That said, DS, who's just started eating solids, gets the occasional shop bought fromage frais from DD's stock pile. It's just that it's to hand and convenient. I will try to get some organic greek yoghurt for him though in the next shop. Blush

FunnysInTheGarden · 10/10/2010 22:23

yes, PF's are fine. I was really pleased DS2 had a cold PF out of the fridge. I used to have to warm them up for DS1. The amount of sugar will be minimal - esp compared to making your own with puree and yoghurt

limonejelly · 10/10/2010 22:25

Just give them normal plain yeo valley yoghurt - once they've developed a taste for horribly sweet/flacoured stuff you're buggered - same with water v fruit juice.

And we just ladle ours out of the big pot - so no need for the dcs to see the branding at all - also good.

IMoveTheStars · 10/10/2010 22:28

Yes, fine.. Sainsbury's own brand have no added sugar and are probably cheaper :)

SirBoobAlot · 10/10/2010 22:29

They're practical if nothing else; possibly not the healthiest food in the world, but easy and generally a hit. DS gets whichever fromage frais is on offer when I go shopping He will also eat natural yoghurt, but I hate the inevitable waste that comes with it.

Own brand ones are normally very cheap.

piprabbit · 10/10/2010 22:32

Fruit puree and freshly squeezed juice are (according to my dentist) the stuff of the devil - sugar and acid combined.

snice · 10/10/2010 22:35

PF are handy and my children love them-BUT-they're so sweet that they find real yoghurt unpalatable now.If I could go back I wouldn't have given them to them when they were little but used natual yoghurt with purees

zebedeethezebra · 11/10/2010 16:44

Don't do it, they are full of sugar. My DS loves plain Yeo Valley Greek Style natural yoghurt with nothing added. I suggest you try that first before trying others as your baby might like it too and there's no sugar in it at all.

stressheaderic · 13/10/2010 23:26

I'm been giving 8mo DD the Muller Little Stars, bought a job lot to get the ELC 20% off vouchers for Xmas presents

sparkleshine · 15/10/2010 23:20

Lol stressheaderic...... I could have written the same as you ( been buying for ages and all family have got 20% off on DS presents )

I've been giving DS muller stars yoghurt since weaning. I know there is sugar in them, but it's the only bit of sugar he gets really as I'm quite fussy about that ( and salt). Plus they do need some sugar in their system for energy.

twirlymum · 15/10/2010 23:38

As long as you brush their teeth, it's fine. Some sugar is necessary.

zombishambles · 16/10/2010 08:59

I think they get all the natural sugars they need from fruit and natural yoghurt/milk though - dont think they need any more refined stuff.

Though my 2 year old dd obviously loads up on flapjacks etc tsk so am not doing too well there.

HeadlessLadyBiscuit · 16/10/2010 09:01

I think they're too sugary. Plain yog is fine (and cheaper than PF)

cece · 16/10/2010 09:14

My DC have eaten them since that age and also drunk fruit juice and squash (from slightly older) on a regular basis. Plus they have sweets regularly too.

I always get complemented on the condition of their teeth when we go to the dentist. No fillings so far and they are 9 and 7. Just make sure you clean their teeth properly imo.

belgo · 16/10/2010 09:15

Yes you can give them but they are not yoghurt so do not contain the beneficial bacteria that yoghurt contain.
