How many meals a day should a 6.5 month old have?

Bit confused. Started weaning DS2 at nearly 6 months. He is super keen and gobbling up whatever I've been giving him which is so far baby rice and purees of fruit and veg plus some finger foods (chopped apple, cucumber etc). Annabel Karmel's schedule has him on 2 meals a day at this stage, increasing to 3 next week I believe. However, Kelly Mom seems to give different advice, saying only one meal at 6-9 months so that they don't reduce their milk intake. He's still feeding loads and doesn't appear to have dropped any feeds since I started solids, nor do I want him to. Anyone know which advice is correct or should I just follow his lead? Also, when can I introduce yoghurt? Thanks.

I would say anything between 1 and 3 meals would be fine depending on the baby. I started weaning at about 23 weeks and ds was on 3 very small meals within a few weeks along with his milk feeds. Yoghurt is ok from 6 months.

I would say follow the baby's lead. If he is hungry go with 3 meals, if not stay as you are. Mine was a very keen eater and was at 3 meals at 6 months.
You can give plain yogurt from 6 months.

Mamaloco, does that not risk them cutting down on their milk?

As long as they are having a pint of their milk a day then it's fine.

Give as many meals as you can be bothered with like.

If you give milk feeds before solids (which is what Kellymom recommends) you should be fine.

We started with 2-3 meals but are BLWing so DS decides how much he wants to eat. He ate lots right from 6 months but it was 8 months before his milk feeds reduced at all, and even now at 9 months he's having 6 or 7 breastfeeds a day.

Well may be it will reduced the milk intake, but you can't force them to do what they don't want to do!
DD2 doesn't want more milk she wants food, shall I starve her because it is the recommandations? probably not!
Babies don't read recommandations.
As long as they have 1 pints (may be at least 3/4 full BF a day) it will be OK. Plus add yogurt and cheese after 6 months.

Lea had only 2 small solid meals a day by 7 months. She was only on 3 small meals by 8 months.

I liked taking it slowly. I followed her lead. She's now on 3 meals + 2 small snacks + 2 milk bottles a day. She's happy, she's healthy and she's solid. :P :D

I'd go with your gut in this instance. There's no need to rush, and those books are mostly guidelines. (I myself don't seem to be a great fan of Annabel Karmel)

Hi Gangle, my 6 month old has gone pretty rapidly to 2 meals a day. In fact I sometimes I offer her something 3 times a day, just depends what we're doing. Inevitably she is starting to take a bit less milk, and I think that in a month or so she will probably just need 3 milk feeds a day. This is ok, as that is the whole point of weaning, to gradually increase the amount of solids and reduce the amount of milk. I know others think differently about this but that is my opinion. Don't worry too much about the schedules, do what suits you and your DS, but personally I don't think Annabel Karmel's schedules are the work of the devil Grin.
