What are the best finger foods?

Just been wondering about this. DD has started with very very smooth mashed up food(almost like very thick puree) and I want to try finger foods but have had little success. I boiled some carrot sticks and left them in the water afterwards for ages so they were nice and soft but hard enough to hold. When she sucked on it though and a bit of it got into her mouth she gagged and looked very upset....Think carrot wasn't the best idea. Anybody got any advice for other good finger foods to start with??? Also a lot of things like banana and avocado just slip out DDs hand....surely me holding it for her defeats the point of it all.....

cheers

I tried to do lots of home cooked things and in the end I have found the easiest thing for my now 7 month old DS is an Organix rice cake. We still try other things but these seem to be easy for him to both hold and gnaw (sp?) on.

Good luck!

Yeah thought about them, will give that a go! Thank you

marmite fingers and cucumber.

Gagging is perfectly normal, and the only way she will learn to chew things, so don't be put off by that.

Bananas are easiest if you just cut off an inch of peel at a time. Similarly with pears, just peel a bit at a time

Like the peel idea. I was stupidly just giving her slimy chunks hehe...

ps yet to sound stupid again..what are marmite fingers

Probably bits of toast or bread with marmite on? Going to depend on whether your DD loves or hates it!

Broccoli is easy to hold and eat

Banana, avocado, papaya are all pretty soft. If she's really gagging, maybe make the texture of her puree's a wee bit grainier?

I was so paranoid of choking, I only started giving finger foods at 9 months. Organix rice cakes works a charm! Dried mango under supervision and biltong is a BIG hit.

Little squares of bread and butter or tiny sarnies.

Fifilottie · 11/10/2010 17:37

cheers all,

keep trying all of the above. She seems to be getting the hang of it(if sweet...doh)...so cute to see her gum chewing. Am very interested in trying little sarnies :)

My 6mo son loves mini pitta breads which I fill with cheese or something soft. Also pieces of mild cheese, toast fingers, plum chunks (skin on, he sucks off flesh and spits out skin!), courgette sticks, mini sandwiches (dont overfill them tho or it gets very messy!). He also likes a hunk of meat to suck on - roast beef is very popular!

I'd go easy on the Marmite at this stage - it's very salty...

Roast veg are good, cut in chip shapes.

Anything orange (except orange...)

Biggish bits of pasta (rigatoni work well) with a wee bit of unsalted butter on.
