At what age should toddlers stop 'first thing in the morning' and 'just before bed' milk?? And how much should they have??? My DD is 2½ but give 150ml before bed and same when she wakes...

As long as we are not talking BM, my eldest 2 are 10 and 13 and still have milk as part of their going to bed routine and with / before breakfast in the mornings. And yes it is still full fat normal milk.

Why do you want to stop it?

Champersonice · 27/09/2010 12:29

Well, I don't particularly want to stop but some mums (friends) have said I should. I just wondered if she is getting too much calcium but I think she is allowed up to 500mg or something??

I am talking about full fat cows milk but so what if it was BM? I personally wouldn't want to BF at this age and also not so sure it is ok but some mums do it for a long time. I think Jane Seymour famously BF her kids till they were 6!!!

Thanks for replies.

Really? I've never heard of too much calcium - but anyway, I'm sure a mug of milk a day isn't going to do her any harm!

Thanks!

I think some of my friends think it is a bit 'babyish' but I am with you on this one!!

Fair enough to have milk, but from 2 yrs you should really switch to semi-skimmed, as they don't need the extra fat then.

paisleyleaf · 27/09/2010 12:59

My 6 year old still has milk in the morning and bedtime (semi skimmed now though).
She brushes her teeth afterwards at bedtime. And also for dental reasons, it's probably best not to keep on with a bottle.

witchwithallthetrimmings · 27/09/2010 13:03

there is no reason for any child to switch to semi-skimmed unless they have a diet particulaly high in fat elsewhere (and tbh it is probably best to reduce the amount of ice-cream and butter rather that switch milk). Full fat milk is higher in nutrients than semi-skimmed and is also tastier

Champersonice · 27/09/2010 13:04

Oh ok was wondering about when to change to semi too, so thanks for that. I always brush DH's teeth before bed and she doesn't drink from a bottle.
I thank you...

I only mentioned BM as in the age of mine, obviously they dont have it. We save that for their little brother.

The other thing is that people tend to forget that full fat cows milk is still relatively low fat. Low fat being classed as 5 percent or below, Full fat is only 4% Semi Skimmed is 2% and Skimmed milk is 1%.

Champersonice · 27/09/2010 15:37

Thanks missnevermind - glad to hear your older kids aren't BF anymore lol although I saw a programme where some of that age still were!!! Think that says more about the mother than the kids...but that is for another topic, no doubt.
