Do the different brands of formula milk taste different?

I've been trying to get DD2 aged 10 months to drink some formula milk now I've been cutting down the bf with a view to stopping over the next month.

Despite trying a variety of cups she will drink water happily from, she is unwilling to have much more than about 30 or 40mls of formula. I am giving her cow and gate. She had some aptimal and SMA in the small cartons while i was on hols and seemed to take this better - or was it a coincidence?

Are any of the formulas closer in taste to breast milk than others?

Any help gratefully received!

They probably do all taste a bit different and there will be a difference in taste between the powder and the cartons too as the cartons have been heat treated which changes the flavour.

If you can find it, can recommend HIPP organic formula. Our DS1 wouldn't touch SMA, but took straight to this one (it was a while ago though!)

Hadn't thought of that one so will have a look, thanks.

She has just drunk some semi skimmed cows milk straight from the fridge quite happily this morning :0 so if push comes to shove I'll jusy move her onto cows milk early.

yeah they all taste different and they all taste gross imo

if she has tasted 'real' milk (cows milk) she wont want formula

and if she has been bf, formula will be yack in comparison

and none are like breast milk

After a personal taste test:

Cows milk (semi skimmed, didn't have any full fat in the house) tastes best, then it is formula from powder (tastes like sugary milk), then formula from a carton (sugary UHT milk) and breastmilk last (buttery, cheesy, sugary milk). Of course this is based on adult taste buds and my own particular brand of breastmilk Wink and I'm sure that if all baby has had is breastmilk then that would taste the best and everything else is an acquired taste and they should learn to drink different formulas. After all, when I first tried red wine I didn't like it too much... Grin

I think I'll give the HIPP brand a go and if that doesn't work I'll just take a pragmatic view and go to cows milk (with spinach at every mealGrin

I'll let you know later if she drinks it or I've been washing it out of my hair and clothes...Wink

It's interesting hearing your views everyone!

We used HIPP this supper when in Croatia ( Aptamil was too epensive) and at first there were strange faces but she took on with no problem and i still have some at home. HIPP is one of my favourite brands anyway . I also got a lot of HIPP baby tea which is fruit flavoured granules and we have that instead of juice.

this summer not supper :)

I have seen it in Boots

Hazeyjane · 21/09/2010 21:57

You can order Hipp online from Boots and from their own website.

I have tasted

Aptamil (wierdly metallic)

Cow and Gate (as above + leaves gacky coating in mouth)

Hipp (the least yacky and seemed sweeter than the above)

purplewednesday · 22/09/2010 09:35

ooh, I was going to try Boots today so thanks. Also may be near mothercare so will give that a go.

2.5 oz of HIPP in the baby.

Considerably more on my t shirt Grin

At least she has drunk more of it than the other brands!
