Salt

Advice please!!

I'm aware that salt shouldn't be added to my DD's food (she's 8mo) and I have no intention of doing so.

But I wondered how careful one should be about salt? We don't cook rice/pasta/veg in salted water and I avoid using prepared sauces/babyfoods etc that contain salt, but what about things like bread and cheese which usually contain some salt?

We've got butter without salt, but do we need to be that careful?

We live in Spain and they add salt to EVERYTHING - including most of their commercial babyfoods. Also it's hard to get things like tinned tomatoes/puree without salt added.

And incidentally, hypertension is the most prolific chronic health problem here...

So, I want to keep the amount of salt as low as possible, but can't work out how fastidious I should be about it. Avoid every last grain of the stuff, or allow the odd thing that has salt in it?

Thoughts??

I didnt bother too much about salt in bread, cheese or even butter, I just didnt add it to the food myself.

HV said that cheese is a really good thing to feed babies because its high in calcium and calories

I worried about this loads (ds is now 11mo) and I decided to go with the flow - not adding any salt but just keeping and eye on salty things like cheese, balancing lots of cheese with lots of veg etc. Watch out for bread, that's saltier than you think. They are allowed 1g a day, so a bit of salt in things is ok. I think once they're 1yr then they're allowed 3g per day...
