Best fish for weaning?

DS is just 7 months and so far has only had fruit and veg so I'm just about to start on some meats and fish. Can anyone advise as to the best, safest fish to begin with? Have heard conflicting stories about fish being a potential allergen and so some people are avoiding it - and on the other hand you have to give them fish or they'll end up with a pea-sized brain!

Also, if you did do fish at this age, how did you prepare it?

Thanks.

I never heard that fish was an allergen. Can't remember how old dd was when we gave her it but salmon always went down quite well and there are no bones.

Your not supposed to have oily fish more than once or twice a week I think.

I think fish allergy is quite uncommon

I would give fish at 7 months, it's an excellent food

any fish really - but for softness and nice flavour, maybe some haddock poached in milk? anything as long as you take the bones out, really.

I think you are meant to avoid swordfish and marlin due to potential high mercury levels - but I may have made that up!

Thanks - as to the milk, do you use ordinary cows milk at this age for cooking? I know they can't drink it yet. What's the difference? DS is breastfed, has never had any other sort of milk. Presumably people don't cook with expressed milk or formula???

Yes, that's right about marlin and swordfish, if I remember correctly from my pregnancy books!

Might start with plaice - my mum always cooks plaice when people are sick, she says it's very "gentle" Smile

Yes, you can use cows milk for cooking.

DS had cod/haddock/salmon at this age quite frequently. Tuna is handy, but only once or twice a week.,

Avoid shellfish initially though.

DD loved any white fish and enjoyed salmon when she was a bit older (9 months ish)
Cows milk is fine for cooking (and on cereal etc.)
