How and when did you know your LO was ready for weaning?

DS2 is 24 weeks old and still EBF. DH thinks DS is ready for weaning on basis he is waking 4 ish times a night, stays awake at night, and is now trying to grab food.

BUT, could these be 6 month growth spurt?
Wondering whether to wait extra 2 weeks or not.

The guidelines as to when seem so attributable to other reasons.

It is only two weeks, but wondered how others decided when.

Thanks

Ability to sit up unsupported.

Loss of tongue thrust reflex.

Pincer grasp

Ability to pick up food, put in mouth, bite, chew and swallow.

DD was 27 weeks when she was ready.

thanks libertygibbet. ds2 can't sit unsupported yet. not sure if he has lost tongue thrust reflex or able to pick up food etc. he picks things up.
he doesn't have pincer grasp yet either. i thought that came quite a bit later?

DS2 is 27wks now (but was born a month early), he's not sitting up unaided and I've just noticed today that he doesn't have the tongue thrust reflex anymore. Once he's sitting up properly we'll do baby led weaning (worked a treat with DS1). I can't be bothered to start until then! [un-PFB-emoticon] The pincer grasp comes later, it's harder to do than grabbing a chip-shaped piece of food.

Hi MrsJamin - thanks for posting. DS2 is sitting very well with support (I just put my hands around his waist and he holds his body and his head up fine). I'm not in a rush to start whatsoever, I just wonder if his constant waking / lack of sleep is indicative that maybe he needs something more now. And blimey, he keeps grabbing bowls and trying to get food as well, although I know that isn't a trusty indicator, he's showing such an interest in food. If I let him, I know he'd grab it and put it in his mouth, but then everything goes in! Grin God it's difficult to ascertain if ready or not! How did you know that your DS has lost his reflex?

I knew he'd lost the reflex as he doesn't push the calpol out of his mouth anymore (he's teething) - he takes it off a spoon and seems to slurp it a bit. So I think we'll start in ernest next week after we've come back from a festival over the weekend! He's still not very good at picking things up but he does seem very interested in food so perhaps that will motivate this skill! Good luck with it all :)
