Which bottled water is best for babies?

Please? I did a scan of the bottles in my supermarket today and Highland Spring came out as the lowest sodium but I have just read on the NHS website that spring water is best avoided Confused Evian seemed to be the next lowest. I am just starting to give DS a few sips of water but can't bear to give him London tap water as it is so gross (especially once you know what's in it).

Just boil it and let it cool down. Get a filter too, if it makes you feel better.

Think its a waste of time to buy bottled water, tbh. And slightly precious! Wink

Tabitha8 · 20/08/2010 20:18

The use of bottled water might at least avoid fluoride, if that's a consideration?

castille · 20/08/2010 20:31

The French would say Evian.

I live in France and all the zero or low nitrate waters with low levels of minerals are considered fine for babies.

(But we drink filtered eau de tap)

Erm...What's wrong with tap water? Confused

Genuinely interested.

MrsBadger · 20/08/2010 23:46

so what is in London tap water? Hmm

differentnameforthis · 20/08/2010 23:46

babies are fine with cooled boiled water, much better for them than any bottled water.

MrsBadger · 20/08/2010 23:47

how old is child though?

tap water fine from 6m, no need to boil. And no need to give water before 6m unless ff baby in v hot weather.

DilysPrice · 20/08/2010 23:48

Tap water has much higher legal standards of bacteria control than any bottled water. You're going to have to boil it anyway.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 20/08/2010 23:49

Tap water is fine, surely?

And what is in London tap water? Doesn't it have to conform to the same standards as the rest of the country?

I would be very wary of giving a baby mineral water - the sodium is far more of a potential worry than whatever is in the tap water.

BertieBotts · 20/08/2010 23:54

I think NHS website just means that bottled water is best avoided in general. For a few sips though - how old is he? If he's breastfed and under 6 months, he shouldn't need water yet. After 6 months I can assure you he will be ingesting worse from the food he eats and the general crap he picks up from the floor!

Stokey · 22/08/2010 13:28

London tap water is fine - much lower sodium than mineral water.

Juts filter it, or give it boiled and cooled.

zebedeethezebra · 25/08/2010 20:38

For the record, there's nothing wrong with fluoride in water.

HeadFairy · 25/08/2010 20:42

You do know it's a myth that London water has been through 8 sets of kidneys don't you? London water is fine... I've always been advised to never give bottled water for the sodium content, and never repeatedly boil water before giving it to a baby as it can concentrate the minerals in it.

AngelDog · 26/08/2010 08:26

Agree with Bertie - under 6 months he shouldn't need it unless exclusively ff and in a heatwave. By 6 months or so they will take in all sorts of horrible stuff from the floor. My 7.5 m.o. DS likes to suck the tiles on our kitchen floor (and I normally only wash it once every few months Blush). We call it Baby Led Cleaning. Grin

Everything I've read advises against bottled water, not just because of the salt, but because of other mineral content too.
