Yoghurt before 6 months

Can anyone explain why yoghurt is no longer recommended as a first weaning food? All I can find by googling is that it is because of the risk of allergies to cow's milk which makes me seeing as infant formula is cow's milk and babies have that before 6 months... or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Just curious really. I am aware of advice not to wean before 6 months.

I'm sure it's more about not weaning before 6 months really. It could also be due to the amount of sugar is most yogs such as petit filous.

Yes formula is cow's milk so think they have a prob using that as the reason.

Yes, but if you had a cow's milk allergy, you would know from drinking formula me thinks.

Formula is cow's milk though. It is first on the list of ingredients - 'Skimmed Cow's Milk' - they would have to say what had been done to it if it has been processed no?

I got this info in my weaning appointment with the health visitor who said that the official advice is that gluten free grains and certain fruits and veg are OK after 17 weeks but not yoghurt any more but she didn't know why. When DD was little the health visitor recommended plain yoghurt with fruit puree as a first food so I just wondered what has changed.

Official advice surely is that nothing is recommended before 6 months? From 6 months though pretty much anything but honey is fine.

MoonUnitAlpha · 02/08/2010 18:38

Nothing but breast/formula milk before 6 months that is!

I have never been recommended to use yoghurt a first weaning food (dd is nearly 7) - it was always baby rice, fruits, veg, etc if you were weaning before 6 months.

Dont what formula you have seen but the stuff I used had proper instructions on how to make it up (I just didnt follow it to the letter)

So no massive problem with giving tastes of fruit and organic whole yoghurt before 6 months then if cows milk allergy is ruled out?

Just checking why specifically the health visitor said no yoghurt.

After delving (googling) around this topic though I have decided to try my hand at making yoghurt out of breast milk

I reckon (and it's only my opinion) that the HV said it as she was thinking more about petit filous type yogs that are fairly high in sugar.

Peasplease - if you're giving organic natural/whole yog with fruit etc, I'm sure there'll be no probs.

I gave DD and DS the special baby petit filous which were natural yog with fruit puree but then they discontuned them (don't know why) but my children are fine! Yoghurt is a great source of protein and calcium for little ones and you just have to use your common sense - HVs all have their own lists of do's and dont's and that doesn't mean they know any better than you, as the mother.
