How much fluff?

My baby eats fluff. I vacuum vehemently, so she migrates to the doors and picks the carpet fluff from the join.

Obviously this means constant vigilance, banished to the cot every time I need a wee etc.

She is also willing to suck shoes/socks/feet, pick up specks of dust and munch on doorframes.

My question is... is this normal? Does your child eat fluff?

She refuses weetabix, by the way. It doesn't say much for their taste, does it?!

Normal. poor you! they find the wheels of the pram particularly delicious, BTW.

Lionstar · 21/07/2010 11:27

I think I'd rather eat fluff than weetabix

Otherwise, totally normal - I believe it helps strengthen their immune systems. I have heard the theory that kids raised in an ultra clean home (especially with the anti-bacterials) actually get more illnesses and things like asthma.

My DS loves to eat shoes, pram wheels and suck the garden hose

PinkyBurgerhead · 21/07/2010 11:28

I think it's just the irony that I sterilise her drinking cup and pour boiling water over bowls sometimes too

and we'll go to the public library and she'll lick the floor.

Ah, so step away from the steriliser. Absolutely no need once they can choose their own 'nutrition'

PinkyBurgerhead · 21/07/2010 11:34

In all seriousness then,

is it okay to eat fluff? Will it come straight out again? Will she have her appendix removed in years to come, and the doctors will say "why, it's all woolley"

Well I wouldn't feed it to them on a spoon, but a bit of fluff is not going to do them harm. Obviously do try and distract them and give them something more appropriate to suck, but don't stress it either.

My DS ate a handful of daisy flowers yesterday, and gave every sign of having enjoyed them, bugs and all probably! If he sees me coming he will stuff in his gob whatever he has in his grimy mitts then clamp his lips shut. He's only got 2 teeth, but it's the devils job getting past them with a soft finger to remove the offending article - unless it's chokeable or minging I often don't bother

ReadingTeaLeaves · 21/07/2010 22:14

Sorry Pinky I have nothing helpful to say except that your post just made me guffaw and guffaw thrice more. Brilliant.

My DS does this too btw. Also with grass at every possible opportunity. Handfuls of the stuff. And yet I am still sterilising. Fool.

jemjabella · 22/07/2010 08:53

My DD sucks the cat's tails if she can get hold of 'em. It's a wonder she doesn't cough up furballs.

Agree with Lionstar - step away from the steriliser!

Lulumaam · 22/07/2010 08:57

DD lived on newspaper and fluff for quite some time, I also found her sucking water out of the rabbit's water bottle

she is about to turn 5, is a healthy and strong little girl , who eats proper food now!

she never liked shiny paper, only newspaper

babies under the age of about 2 don't have the 'disgust' reflex.. so they'll eat anything and everything
think there was a recent thread about someone's baby eating cat sick !!

snugglejunkie · 22/07/2010 09:39

at cat-sick-eating baby!

My DS (just 8mo) is also convinced that paper/tissue/carpet/feet/shoes etc are major food groups and particularly likes eating little feathers our sofa cushions occasionally shed.

Obviously it's something I am trying to discourage, but I'm not concerned - more impressed at his use of advanced pincer grip to pull said feathers out of carpet fibres when the hoover won't get them up

chiefcook · 23/07/2010 22:55

My DS (9mo) Loves sucking baby wipes, and eating grass, fluff, paper and stones. No matter how many times I hoover, he will always find the one I missed!!

ChocolateMoose · 23/07/2010 23:00

Paper. What is it with paper? Take your attention away for 5 minutes and there's a bite-sized piece missing and DS chewing away smugly.

Habbibu · 23/07/2010 23:02

oh, yy to wheels, colditz. ds licks them at every opportunity. blerg
