Hi,

We have started the weaning process, dg is 5 mth old. The dr. said to start with apple or pear. Since we do not want to use jars I have been steaming a bit of apple and then putting it through the food processor. Then a few days ago my dh and mil insisted that I grate the apple very very fine and give it to her. it was all going somewhat well but now for the last few days she won't take any of it, just spits it back out, regurgitates, or gets really agitated. The dr. said to give her a jar of homogenized apple because it is very smooth and babies prefer it. My dh is totally against it. I don't quite know what to do and would really appreciated some advice.

Thanks!

Are your DH or MIL doing the feeding or pureeing? If not then suggest that they leave the decisions to you and your DR.

A 5mnth old will not yet be able to cope with anything other than a very smooth puree, and lumps may put too much strain on her digestive system and cause problems. Why does your DH want to give her lumps? especially when it goes against the doctors advice.

I am doing the feeding and pureeing. I had grated the apple very fine so there are no lumps but it does tend to be quite 'fibrous' (no idea if that makes sense). It seems to be quite the norm in Italy (where I live) to grate the apple. However, when I have pureed the apple I try to make it as smooth as possible.

My dh also thinks he knows best and it is very difficult to persuade him!

thanks for the advice grapesandmoregrapes

are you giving her raw grated apple?? that cannot be good for such a young baby. If you are weaning her because she is hungry, then baby rice may be better.

Tell you DH that you are doing as the DR suggested and if he thinks otherwise then he should discuss it with the DR first.
