Packing List

Any tips for what to pack. I hate packing, get the panic that we will forget something essential. Mostly had holidays at home so can fill the car to the rafters but obviously going long haul I will need to be a bit more selective. Any tips would be much appreciated. Thanks

This is what I do. I'm sure everyone else will have different things or timescales.

Remember that, worst case scenario, the US will have ALMOST EVERYTHING that you could possibly want, if you leave it behind. What it won't have is your documents, paperwork etc. So about a month before we go I put out ESTAs, passports, insurance documents etc on a little used table. Also money related things, sim cards if needed, and a note to include any prescription medicines we might need. Check it's all OK, in date, valid etc. You can then add to it as and when you might think of things. Don't forget a driving licence with a credit card in the name of the driver.

In the couple of weeks before we go I start to put out things, toiletries, games or puzzles for the plane, teabags (!), sunscreen, plastic bags (always useful), cooling towels, backpacks, ponchos etc. I might not take them all, but have them to hand when I'm packing and can decide then.

In the week before we go it's clothes. Undies (don't forget socks), tops, bottoms, a jumper or two. If you stay somewhere with a washing machine you won't need much. You can buy washing powder in Walmart. Make sure things can be safely tumble dried or you'll have to hang wet things on hangers. Do you need posh clothes?

We've travelled to WDW a lot and I've sort of got it down to a fine art now. It works for us. But Walmart and Publix are amazing supermarkets and will have most things that you need.

I make a list and keep adding to it when I remember something else I need to take and then when it comes to packing, I tick them off.

Depending on the limit of how heavy your suitcase can be depends what you should take vs what you should get there.

Eg you will need a hand held fan. Florida is scorching especially in summer. However you can buy them from almost everywhere there. I prefer to pack one to use it as soon as we leave the airport.

You will definitely need the comfiest shoes you own with blister Plasters. You WILL do a LOT of walking.

And the obvious sunblock :)

Just back from 10 nights in Florida, with hand baggage only. You can get everything there, and often so much cheaper, especially at the discount outlets like Simon (download the coupons for extra discounts). As said above, we shopped a lot in Walmart and Publix.

We’re used to travelling light, and I always take a block of laundry soap for undies (definitely don’t pack 11 sets of those).

Bring US plug adapters, as not all places will have usb. Take a couple of bottles of suncream to start you off, and buy more as needed out there.

Credit card essential; a lot of car hire companies don’t like debit cards.

Wear your heaviest clothes going out. I had a capsule wardrobe of black and navy which worked perfectly. Plastic bags for dirty laundry and wet swim gear.

Packing cubes are brilliant.

Trainers, at least two pairs each. One pair to leave to dry if it's rained. T-shirts or similar that cover the shoulders (easily burned). Extension lead in addition to adapters. Extra trainer socks. And something warm to wear in the house (if you're staying in a villa or similar).

And we all wear a beyootiful fanny pack/bum bag, big enough for a small bottle of water, phone, credit card/money and (in my case) a small tin of vaseline. Maybe some plasters too.

Oh and for boys- try and get them cooler underwear. Ds2 suffered quite badly one year with the normal thick kind.

Otherwise, as per PPs, you can but pretty much anything you've forgotten while there.

Except decent tea. Take that, if you're a tea drinker.

I took teabags, but didn’t use them, due to an absence of kettles. Tea made from the hot water urn or a microwave just isn’t the same. I resign myself to drinking weak American coffee during our stay.

The dream, to be able to pack with just hand luggage. Though I think I’d need to buy a case to bring back merch, clothes and food though.
We go again next May so hoping I can reduce amount of clothes I take and use the laundry more. We were there this time last year so needed some warm clothes as a contingency in case of a cold snap (which thankfully we didn’t need), plus Halloween costumes.
Must look into packing cubes as off to DL Paris in feb and only want to use hand luggage despite having hold allowance with BA. Suspect we’ll need many layers compared to Florida!!

i always take a pop up laundry basket. Packs down flat and is just handier and tidier than a carrier bag.
Also a over door shoe organiser type thing is really useful for sunglasses, sunscreen, ears, bits and bobs that your looking for every morning.
