Tipping

Ok so prompted by another thread I'm worried that I've massively underestimated the number of places and how much we need to tip when we go to Orlando next month!!

We fully expected to add 20% on to all food bills and the same with the Uber drivers.

But I've just read on another thread that it's more than that and now I have questions!

We usually decline anyone carrying our bags at hotel check in etc (not because we don't want to tip but just that we prefer to carry our own). Now I'm worried this will make us seem rude - is it expected that we say yes and agree and will appear rude if we decline or will they not care either way?

Also housekeeping. When we've travelled in Europe we've left a tip at the end of the week but I've just seen posters saying they tip EVERY DAY in the US; is this what we need to do? and how much should we be leaving? do we just leave it on the pillow or somewhere else?

Is there anywhere else we need to tip that I've not thought of?

If it helps we are staying at Disney AKL and Universal Hard Rock.

We went in June. We tipped 20% on meals and most places had 18/20/22% tip bracket.

We carried our own bags from the coach to the room (also just because I’d prefer to). We did however tip our coach transfer driver from the airport to the hotel as he loaded our 6 suitcases on and off the coach.

We stayed in a Disney hotel for 2 weeks and you are meant to tip everyday (from memory) I think I read 1 dollar per person per day so if you have 4 people in your room then it’s 4 dollars a day.
I will admit I didn’t do this though… our mousekeeping was pretty much non existent from day 1! We kept our room mostly tidy and Some days they didn’t come in our room at all and other days they only emptied our bin even when our sheets needed changing as my son spilt a drink on them by accident. I think the longest we went without having the sheets changed and new towels was 6 days and this was at the beginning of our stay.

We also stayed in Aventura for a week after our two weeks at Disney and we used to leave 3-4 dollars on the side every other day as that’s how often they cleaned the rooms.

This is a really good question so thanks for posting this.
Adding on parking per day per park is making this a really expensive holiday.

The parking has really bumped the price up!

We never rented the car which for us was 100% the correct decision!

We went for just over 3 weeks and we’re quoted just over 1k for the car alone with only 1 driver and ideally we wanted to both be able to drive it!

1k + parking (I think it worked out around £300 for our stay from memory) + fuel etc… it just wasn’t worth it as we stayed on site at both Disney and universal so used the shuttles and used Ubers for Walmart etc which wasn’t ever more then $8-$12 a time!

We spent 4k in 3 weeks on food, merch, Ubers and general spends.

It was so dear.

We have been a few times and usually pay the middle suggested tip on meal bills. If you are staying on property then you can check in on line and go straight to your room with your cases. Even if I check in at reception I usually wheel my own because it is quicker and this is absolutely fine. Disney housekeeping is barely existent at the moment anyway, but I personally find tipping housekeeping bizarre and have never done it in WDW nor anywhere else in the world.

How many of you was that for @TwinkleChristmas ?

We're 2 adults and 1 teenage boy (so 3 adults really!) and have budgeted £3-£4k spending money for 16 nights......

Staying on site a Universal first half then onsite Disney second half.

Sorry I only just seen this.

It was 2 adults and 2 kids, 1 very fussy so didn’t eat a lot.

It was just over 4k we spent and we had a $504 Disney Dining Credit and $200 Disney Gift Card on top of the 4k.
I didn’t include it in our spends as we got it when booking so felt like ‘free money’.

have you had your trip now? How was it? Hope you had/have a good time.

I have been going for many years and I believe that the tipping is now out of hand. Especially as you can't guarantee that your server actually gets it unless you hand them cash. There is a recommended (by the management) tip at the bottom of every bill, ignore it. You'll find if you look closely that the tip includes the tax for the meal, fat chance of me tipping the taxman and you know that they do not pass that on. I tip 15% maximum unless there has been some sort of miracle produced.
