Should I delete Roblox for my daughter? Advice

princessAlo · 19/01/2025 19:36

Hey everyone, so I bought my daughter who is coming 5 in March and iPad for Christmas. Not sure if it was a good idea because she would play it from the moment she opens her eyes until bedtime if she could, she mostly plays Roblox on it, which I am tempted to possibly delete and I'm not to sure it's appropriate for her age? Seen her shooting someone in it today 🤣 but she is obsessed with it, I think she will go mental if I do delete it. But I am thinking on it because her teacher in p1 said she doesn't listen in class and is falling behind a bit with her phonic sounds. And I notice she copies a lot of the behaviour from Roblox. Does anybody have any advice on this? I can't remember the last time she played with any of her toys, just always wants to play Roblox 🧐

Yes, delete it.

Roblox is an entirely user created game. None of it is created by an official source to any kind of rigorous standard.

You, or I, or the dirty pervert down the road make games and then make them available for everyone else to play. Dirty Perv could call the game 'adopt kittens with me' and give it a fun description about solving challenges and being rewarded with cute lil kitty cats. Then when you get in to the game, every character is naked, speaks only in innuendo or sexual overtures, performs pole dance style 'celebrations" and so on.

It has chat functionality both text and voice, so if you don't implement appropriate parental controls your daughter can make friends online and have conversations with them, they can share links to many external sites like YouTube, Facebook, Discord, X (formerly Twitter), Guilded, and Twitch so could direct her to all sorts of content, it has in app purchasing so if you haven't been careful with buying credits she may be able to buy more without realising she's spending real money.

It's a complete shit show when it comes to safeguarding.

Oh wow I didn't know this at all.. that's awful, she will definitly not be on it

Just to specify, kids that age should have no access to online games. My son is 6, asked for roblox last week after watching some YouTube kids videos. Told him no one was allowed until they're 12. Online games are a can of worms - we're very lax on screens so they've never been an issue with overplaying, and minecraft (peaceful) is great for building pyramids and collecting resources and such, exploring. Browsers are a big no too, we have blocked access so he doesn't know it's a thing. It's your responsibility to make sure that she's not available to bad actors.

Totally!

My kids school have advised against the kids playing Roblox many, many times as it's so dangerous!

I did not know this at all! She is my first child and I would never put her at harm. I have never been around kids and didn't have a clue about games etc until the other day ! I used to see her jumping about as a cat on it. And she has an older sister on her dad's side and it was actually her that downloaded it for her, she's 12, and goes to her dads house a couple nights. So going to need to have a word with him and say I do not want the game back

Its hard if you don't know but in future I would recommend googling games like this and getting the information about the games. There are a lot of good games out there for kids but a lot of crappy ones that are just not safe. Even YouTube kids has had inappropriate content on it, nothing is 100% so you do need to keep an eye on things.

TwilightAb · 19/01/2025 20:03

OP you really need to get clued up on what you are potentially exposing your dd to by letting her have free access to an I pad. She is only 5 and could potentially be accessing all sorts. You tube alone has lots of stuff which may appear suitable for young children but are actually really not. There are a lot of games out there like roblox which are grooming hot spots. I also hope you don't have your bank details set up on her iPad!

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 19/01/2025 20:04

I played it with my older daughter as she likes spending time with me this way. A player called another player a prick and a slag. So yeh not ok for small kids.

princessAlo · 19/01/2025 20:08

I actually was just on the phone with her dad there (not together) and he said he thinks Roblox is good for her development 🧐🧐🧐🧐 and I said how is it good for her development runnin round and people dying

My 13 year old isn't even allowed Roblox! Please please please clue yourself up OP before allowing any more downloads.

My youngest is 6 and she really enjoys duo ABC and the cbeebies story time app.

Notgivenuphope · 19/01/2025 20:12

Get rid
A 5 year old should be playing with toys not gawping at screens.

Yeah exactly I don't really like it I've sometimes watched her playing it and big scary monsters kills her and she's like Look mummy he killed me. I wouldn't mind her playing educational games on her iPad..
I'm going to delete it tommorow when she's at school, anybody any advice what I could say to her on why it's randomly dissapeared? It will be world war 3🤣

Good luck! I don't have much advice except to simply say to her 'it's for older children'. Or if you think she can understand I'd just be blunt with her and tell her that it's not good for her brain (or some such).

But I'm so glad to hear you're going to stop it. I absolutely think 5 is way too young for this. The games are meant to be addictive, that's the point of them and she's so little. I sometimes think I might be a bit OTT but I have no plans to show.mine online games - or any iPad games beyond jigsaws etc - for many years. Until they're teenagers preferably but the reality in me knows that peer pressure is a mighty force so I don't want to speak too soon...

No she’s 5. She doesn’t need Minecraft.

If she’s used to Roblox I think you need to removed the iPad completely for a month or so and then reintroduce it again with some boundaries. The break will help with maintaining the boundaries.

If you actively want her to have screen time then get her some phonics games.

princessAlo · 19/01/2025 20:22

Yeah she likes number games and cat games

Just don't. She doesn't need any of it! Minecraft is just as addictive, just as much a waste of time and childhood. If you can just go cold turkey with the whole thing and put it away for a few weeks.

Sure but an adult has a mature brain and can exercise self control. If they wish to addle their brain with something addictive that’s their problem. But a developing child deserves better and needs adults to make sensible choices for them.

Try years

Apollo365 · 19/01/2025 20:24

Get her into Minecraft, much better than Roblox ☺️
You can restrict the time and age of games she plays on Roblox, turn off chat and the ability to add friends etc.

Yes! I did think to go back and edit that but didn't get the chance. I completely agree about years.

My children don’t at home and they’re much older than yours. You’re the grown-up, you get to decide what she has. She doesn’t need any kind of tablet or device.

lovemetomybones · 19/01/2025 20:29

Roblox is banned in my house and will never be allowed. There is absolutely no control settings that protect your children from graphic violence and potential grooming. It's a vile site. My best friends husband is in IT at a large university and said it's the one platform he will never allow his children on. Fortnite has more content control!
