Wi-Fi connection for gaming PC

I wonder if anyone can help....My daughter has a gaming pc set up with Wi-Fi usb connector. Our broadband speed is good but her connection is patchy so wondering if I need a more powerful Wi-Fi connector for her PC? If so what sort of speed should I be looking for?

Honestly, only a wired, ethernet connection from the router has been acceptable to the gamers in our family, as it can get patchy otherwise.

We've tried multiple usb extenders, etc, which start out OK, but just aren't good enough. We've tried extenders supplied by the isp and different ones bought online.

Our speed is a standard 70mbps, or so. With a wired connection, there are no complaints.

Oh no, wouldn't be easy to achieve a wired connection to the router.

Call of duty on Ps4 dropping connection, Patched in secondary router but all wired with ethernet connections from the original router has helped fix the issue @AnnieMB

original router + ethernet wires to second router + then wires to the pc/ps4

OP, have you checked which channels/frequencies your router is broadcasting on, and whether or not your local area is absolutely choked with WiFi networks?

I have been using WiFi for gaming for nigh on 20 years, across multiple properties in built-up areas, and never once had any problems with packet-loss, connections dropping, lag etc. 9 times in 10, these problems aren't hardware or speed related, they are down to the fact that everyone leaves their ISP-supplied routers to broadcast on default channels, so you end up with sometimes 10 or more detectable routers all fighting over the exact same frequencies.

I'm currently using 5GHz channels rather than 2.4GHz, because nobody else on my entire estate is. I can detect 16 different networks from where I am sitting right now, every single one of them is broadcasting on 2.4GHz, and they are all squabbling over the same half-a-dozen channels.

Thank you I'll check that out too

I had an extended Ethernet connection built into the house, which runs the cable from the hub in the lounge to the room where my son games. He plays off thee Ethernet cable which has thankfully stopped all the endless moaning about glitches

Yep all our gaming PC's are hard wired into the router. Wi-fi is fine for some things but not so much for gaming.

Hey there! It sounds like your daughter's gaming setup could use a little boost. A more powerful Wi-Fi connector might do the trick to improve the connection. Look for one with higher speed capabilities, like an 802.11ac or 802.11ax for a smoother gaming experience. If you have any specific questions or need recommendations, feel free to ask.

AnnieMB · 20/02/2024 12:18

Yes please to recommendations for other more powerful Wi-Fi connections as no scope to wire into the router unfortunately
