Hi

We are looking to get an X box for Christmas. Our kids are 10 and 8 now and don’t do that much gaming at the moment. BUT we only really want to buy one console that’s going to last through the teenage years when we imagine they will use it quite a bit.

My question is which should we buy? The
x box series X seems to be the newest and most expensive model at £450. And the series S is £250. OH says we should get the Series X because it’s better newer (so better technology and will last longer). I would rather get the series S because it’s cheaper and surely does pretty much the same thing?

Also, imagine we need to buy games on top, eek!

Appreciate we are very lucky to be able to consider this type of gift and not everyone has the money this year. This is a one off extravagence that we have been saving up for, for a couple of years now.

Any thoughts on what’s best to get? Thanks

Definitely the X series. The S is cheaper for a reason. The graphics/ memory are better on the X so your DH Is definitely right on this one.

Thanks. Do we need to buy the games or are we better off doing the pass? I didn’t realise we would be paying £20ish a month forever eek!

I would say at 8 and 10 maybe you don't need the pass yet.I can't remember what my DS did, don't think he has the pass now but I'm really not sure. I think the pass just enables loads of extra games etc, but it probably won't have all the ones they want. When DS was younger he would buy the games and have the pass so for now maybe just buy the games you know they will enjoy and leave the pass.

If you don't want to get the game pass and want to buy physical games, you'll have to get the X series because the series S doesn't have a disc drive to take physical games!

I actually think the Xbox Game pass is better for younger kids. My kids always want loads of different games, then play them for two minutes, decide they don't like them/get bored/give up with them. IMO ie better to spend £20 a month on 1000s of games than £60 on one game that never gets played with.

If they want to play online, they will need the pass anyway to get onto Xbox live.

My son has the Xbox S, the x and s came out at the same time. He uses the game pass and we limit it to games up to age 12. He mostly plays stupid Roblox though Confused

If you want to buy games get the Xbox x, if you're happy to use the pass or download games (no resell value then) then just get the Xbox s. Honestly, you don't need the best graphics for 8 and 10 year olds playing awful, awful Roblox or just minecraft etc.

We have a ps5 and I can't see a difference when playing the same game on each Console (maybe DH could though).

When it comes to choosing between the Xbox Series X and Series S, both are great options. The Series X offers more advanced technology and future-proof features, while the Series S is more budget-friendly. If you're looking for a console that will last through the teenage years, the Series X might be a better investment with its superior capabilities. By the way, you can check out the latest Xbox releases to get an idea of the exciting games they can enjoy on their new console.
