What do you care about when looking for a game?

I'm looking to buy a new game to play or even a subscription service like Xbox Game Pass but I'm not a 'gamer'. I was wondering what other women looked for when buying games. Why do you play?

I like big, beautiful open world games where you can explore and the story progresses in a non-linear way. I'm not great with combat but games without combat are hard to find these days. Assassin's Creed: Valhalla is incredible and the combat can be turned to super easy.
Sometimes I look fir games that can be played co-operatively with friends, such as Sea of Thieves - which is on Xbox game pass. Mostly I tend to buy creative games such as Plant Zoo or House Flipper as they're just a nice, chilled way to enjoy some gaming time.

I like open world and I like a bit of swords and sorcery. I don’t mind older games, so at the moment I’m playing Skyrim, which is 10
years old. I also prefer the option to play a female character.

Mind you, I’m also playing through Lego City: Undercover which we got for DS, and am really enjoying it. I’m finding it really fun and quirky in a child-friendly sort of a way! Sometimes I like saving the world, other times I just like bashing Lego things and making stuff 😂

I love games with a really good story. I like all different genres- I’ve just finished stray which I really enjoyed. My favourite game of all time is nier automata but god of war is a close second.

Really depends what you are looking for. Personally I've always been a fan of Nintendo.

If you're less bothered about the power of the next gen consoles and care more about gameplay, a Switch is a great buy. Nintendo are innovative in ways that Sony/ Microsoft just haven't been able to catch up with. You sacrifice a bit on the graphics (only a bit though!) but you get games that are just really fun and playable.

A lot of games are released across all three systems, and the Switch also has Zelda and Mario, you can't go wrong with those.

As for why I play - for the same reason I read books or watch films - escapism, adventure, fun, challenge.

I only seem to play the Sims 4 at the moment! Would definitely recommend it (despite how buggy it can sometimes be)

What gaming systems do you have? Do you have a switch? A laptop/PC? I reccomend animal crossing on the switch. Also Zelda Breath of the Wild. On laptop/pc I reccomend downloading Steam to buy games on. Broken Sword series is great and is cheap at the moment.
On XBox I reccomend Spyro remastered 😃

Achievement.
Social.
Immersion.

So I always choose MMORPGs like WotLK or Lost Ark.

I like games where I can build and progress things the way I want them, so my current favourite games are Cities Skylines, Two Point Hospital/Two Point Campus, Rimworld and I used to play a lot of The Sims (mainly sims 2) but I haven't played that for ages.

Cities Skylines is a city builder - like imagine a model trainset but you also have to lay out all the roads etc, manage the traffic, decide where to put residential, businesses and industry. You end up with beautiful shots that feel like a real place.

Two point Hospital/Campus - you have to build a hospital (or university), hire staff, place rooms etc. You tend to have a budget and goals so you might have an epidemic to deal with or a visitor by the health inspector. Based loosely on Theme Hospital which was an old classic, and still very playable (look at gog.com) - that's a point - anything you played while younger? You can often find old games on there. The other thing I like about this game is that it's funny - the animations are silly and slapstick, there is a constant voiceover/radio show which is funny and the announcer says things like "Please try not to die in the corridors" in an exasperated/sarcastic voice. Dark humour. Just tickles me.

Rimworld is a survival game, you crash on a distant planet and you have to survive and research long enough to build a spaceship and escape. I've never got to the spaceship part because this game is hilariously brutal - there are various animals you can tame or hunt or farm, but things happen like all the tortoises on the map go insane and start biting your people. They can get infections and illnesses that put them in hospital and might kill them if you don't have a skilled enough doctor. Your crops won't grow over winter. If people get too unhappy they go on insane rampages where they attack people or your base etc. Very fun.

The Sims is mostly dressing up animated dolls :D and building them a house. You can make them get married and have babies etc. Best if you get into downloading tons and tons of custom clothing, furniture, etc, which is why I don't play any more as it's so time consuming and there's more fiddling with all the mod files than actually playing so it gets frustrating.

I wouldn't personally buy game pass because it's too much money for me to sit and play the same games over and over. But it might be worth doing a free trial so you can try a few different games and see what you like?

Or do you want to play with other people? That can be fun, too.

This just popped up so I shall take the opportunity to tell you that I’ve just started playing Valheim again, and I’m having so much fun 😄 It’s an early access PC game so expanding all the time, and is a Viking survival game - you can either play alone or online on virtual servers with friends. We have a group of between 2 and 5 of us who jump into our server and are currently building our base and fending off troll attacks. It’s brutal - you die a lot - but good fun. I’m running it on a decent laptop, and DH on a ten years plus old gaming PC, so you don’t need a massively fancy gaming setup either.

Oo this is interesting

I'm looking for something to play as I'm a bit bored with Zelda (although I will carry on and find all 900 korok seeds!) I'm not a massive fighter but I love the puzzles!

kikisparks · 14/09/2022 14:39

I like to explore, so either a platformer that really focuses on exploration and finding hidden items (Super Mario 3D world, Ori and the Blind Forest etc) or an open world adventure game which is not too dark and doesn’t require you to be great at combat (The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild is incredible).

I also love story driven or mystery games so love all the Life Is Strange games and point and click games like Monkey Island, Grim Fandango etc.

I do like time management games like the Sims or Two Point Hospital but I get too sucked in and feel a bit empty after playing them for hours.

Oh and overall turn based strategy rpgs aren’t my favourite but I do love Pokemon, the idea of catching them all really appeals to the collector side of me, and it’s got a story to follow too. I couldn’t get into Final Fantasy even though I wanted to.
