Very surprised that we won a fish at the fair! I didn't realise this was still allowed? Has now cost us over £100 to sort it out properly! Expensive win!!!

£100 for a tank and some food? You've been robbed!

Nachitoches · 12/03/2022 20:02

I won a fish at the fai once. He was popped straight in our pond and grew massive over three or four years. We think an otter got him in the end - one was caught on camera raiding another pond down our road.

AHungryCaterpillar · 12/03/2022 20:08

We did and still have it 7 months later, I always heard fair fish don’t last long! It’s been a very expensive win and yes £100 is believable as tank size needed for a gold fish are very expensive (the small cheap ones are not suitable For a good fish they need a large tank ) I went to pets at home to get the stuff and they were very judgey in there, they immediately said to me as I was buying the tank and other bits “let me guess you won it at a fair 🙄” in a judgemental tone, I told them yes and I was surprised as I didn’t think it was allowed anymore but they said all that’s changed now is the paperwork needed and it’s still allowed.

Paperdolly · 12/03/2022 20:08

Surprisingly this is not against the law. It should be IMHO. Can you donate it to someone with a netted pond?

AHungryCaterpillar · 12/03/2022 20:10

It was actually the “prize” (?) for losing so we didn’t technically win it 😕

hedgehogger1 · 12/03/2022 20:12

It should be illegal. I don't understand how this can still be happening, but then I suppose people are still willing to spend money on the stalls

HoneyFlowers · 12/03/2022 20:51

He's been kitted out with everything, drops of various stuff to add to the water, the tank, the gravel, the filter, ornaments etc. Yes the lady in fish shop very upset when we said we won at fair and said it will probably be dead this weekend.

My sibling won a gold fish at the fair and it lasted 7 years!
picklemewalnuts · 12/03/2022 20:59

Fish now are not as hardy as those won in the past. They are bred with beautiful pure water, which I never managed to match!

Thewindwhispers · 12/03/2022 21:02

Oh dear, good luck. Read up on the water cycle, change some water often to get rid if nitrate / ammonia build up while the ecosystem establishes itself. Good luck!!!

SuperSocks · 12/03/2022 21:03

Poor fish. Sad How can people be so lacking in empathy in this day and age. There's a fish tank in my local bookshop, just a tiny little basic tank with these poor 2 goldfish swimming up and down next to the glass. What a miserable fucking existence. There'd be outrage if there was a dog kept in a cage in a shop, or puppies given away at the fair!

HoneyFlowers · 12/03/2022 22:54

Thanks, he's a lucky little fish, we've learnt everything and he'll get everything needed. Feel sorry for those who haven't a clue how to look after them though. I agree with above, shouldn't be allowed.

Which fair did you win yours at?

It was called fun park, we got it in the summer.

Goldfish need A LOT of space and seriously decent filtration. They are a very dirty fish and will quickly end up swimming in ammonia soup otherwise. At an absolute minimum a single goldfish will need a 45 litre tank. The cheapest 40l tank I could find on the pets at home website was £95. So no, over £100 for a tank and food is not robbery... it's entirely normal if you care about your pets welfare.

Thank you!

Why did you play a game that could result in winning a fish?
I had no idea this was still a thing. No living thing should be a prize.

Frazzled2207 · 09/04/2022 23:46

Surprised this is still a thing but well done for being a responsible fish keeper so far

I won one in the fair in about 1985 and he lived for years.

SlowlyBlossoming · 12/04/2022 13:44

Just an extra thought, goldfish are actually really social fish and should be kept with other goldfish if possible. Solitary goldfish are more prone to illness and depression. I only know because we looked into getting fish once but changed our minds!

Huge well done on getting everything you need for it otherwise though, lovely to know you've given it a great home Thanks
