Anyone played COD Cold War yet? What age would you think it's ok for?

Possums4evr · 15/11/2020 14:07

COD Cold War is clearly an 18 so I know it should be for 18 and up - getting the full-on pester power from my 13 year old who has all his friends playing it, says he can apply a content filter/turn of blood (?) etc.
I normally look at common sense media but they don't have any reviews up yet, so any advice would be appreciated!

It's an 18 so he needs to be 18

Possums4evr · 15/11/2020 14:14

Have you played it?

We have it's chocka blok full of bugs so I wouldn't rush to buy it until a few patches have been released. I've played all of the others. Personally the multiplayer is tame and yes you can turn the gore off. The story line ... I suppose it depends how sensitive your kid is. I wouldn't say it's hugely graphic in terms of violence. Watch some gameplay on YouTube and decide that way?

MoonDelay · 15/11/2020 16:29

Just to say I haven't played the story line in this game but the others have content that can be a little upsetting

faginssidekick · 15/11/2020 16:34

It's suitable for age 18 and over.

FixTheBone · 15/11/2020 16:35

It's an 18.....

Would you buy him some porn at the same time?

Dazedandconfused10 · 15/11/2020 16:41

I've played the multiplayer. And I'll play zombies on it. You can turn off the gore to be fair and I mean in terms of storyline its nothing like GTA.

Possums4evr · 15/11/2020 16:55

Thank you for responses. Yes YouTube is the way to go I think. He wants to play with his friends, so more likely multi player than campaign. It's ridiculous to ask if I would get him porn Hmm I realise age ratings are based on certain aspects of any game and wondered if he could genuinely turn some of those off (as he tells me) or if he's just chancing it.
Every 13 year old boy in his class claims to be playing it. Confused

Which bit - that all the kids have it? Oh yes I know, it's a tale as old as time isn't it?! I am not as gullible as I may appear

Yes Grin

My son (17) bought it & returned it the day it came out as he said it wasn’t great and not worth the money. He didn’t specify why though, sorry.

Flushii · 15/11/2020 20:18

I’ve asked a friend and he said for the multiplayer with the gore turned off about 13/14. Apparently the zombies for 15+. I’m not sure what any of that means, but he also said it depends on the maturity of the child. So if he’s playing multiplayer with the gore turned off I’d say it would be okay, but I also know nothing about games or 13 year old boys

TicTacTwo · 15/11/2020 20:21

If ds is buying it (with permission) then I recommend he waits a bit until it goes down in price. I'd be very surprised if you couldn't get a good deal for Black Friday.

I suspect that many of your son's friends are playing it. Now that the Fortnite craze is pretty much over for secondary kids, they want a new shooter to play and they are generally 16 or 18.

I'm surprised that it's playable so early on. CoD is notorious for massive updates and patches because they release a new one each year so the quality control is dubious.

I've noticed that with fortnite, ds and his friends have uninstalled it this week. Ds has decided not to ask to buy COD CW with his money as he wants to learn to drive instead.
Possums4evr · 15/11/2020 21:47

Thank you - he really doesn't get to do age inappropriate things in general, and got a hard and permanent "no" when GTA5 was requested a while back! But I'm very conscious of maintaining his friendships which he struggles with a bit for various reasons. I do think there is sometimes a difference in modes within a game, hence asking on here. Minecraft survival isn't the same experience as minecraft creative, for example.

To be fair a lot of 13 year olds will have it - my Year 9 boys were all really excited to get home and start to play it.

Even if they don't play it they watch it on YouTube.

ThunderSkies · 15/11/2020 22:10

My 13 year old doesn’t play these games Hmm

lockedownloretta · 15/11/2020 22:22

If every 13 year old boy in his class said they were watching a particular porn film, would you canvass opinions in whether to get it for him?

Possums4evr · 15/11/2020 22:42

Do porn films ever have an option to turn off the sex? Because that is what I've been enquiring about on here. And thankfully have had answers from people who have seen the game. He can't even download an app without my approval and cannot delete his browser history, I have iPhone controls on tight, he has had one 16 game (Spider-Man) which I've watched myself and couldn't see a problem with. I looked at mumsnet when he was asking about GTA and it was clear to me that there was no way that would be ok (possibly not at 18 either!)

Pieceofpurplesky · 16/11/2020 00:01

@ThunderSkies does he watch them on YouTube? Does he play them with houses?

I wouldn't let my DS until he was 15 but by then he had played them at all his mates

Pieceofpurplesky · 16/11/2020 00:01

With friends not houses!

Flutterby8 · 21/11/2020 17:54

@Possums4evr I haven't played the new COD yet but I have played the others. It is an 18 but each parent will have different views on what they deem appropriate or not. As others have said, on multiplayer you can turn off a number of the more graphic scenes so it does cut down a bit on what is being viewed. It doesn't exclude everything though.
Personally, going by some of the other games in the series, I wouldn't deem it suitable for a young teen. Thats just my personal opinion. Lots of kids now will watch you tube and be exposed to this type of game content in their viewing. I guess you have more control of a game with regards to changing the settings than you do with whatever they are watching on their phones etc.
There are lots of other games that aren't quite so graphic available but I can see how difficult it is with peer pressure and everything.
