Hi all

My DS (9) has asked for a game cube for Christmas. Mostly to play Super Mario 1000 year door (a gamer / youtuber he loves really bigs this game up)

I guess I want to know if anyone has any recommendations as to where I should buy this as obviously it will have to be second hand. Also if anyone has any other recommendations for games - thanks !

This is a bit of a daft question but have you checked the price of the game? It's a hard one to get hold of, and if you manage to find one it will cost you a pretty penny.

Gamecubes can be purchased for a decent price from CEX, and they also come with a warranty.

I was going to suggest CEX too. Ebays another option but in my experience they go for a similar price to CEX but CEX is more reliable.
Other games I would recommend sonic adventure 2 battle, super Mario sunshine, Pokemon coliseum, Metroid prime and Luigis mansion. I loved the GameCube.

Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door is considered a fairly rare game and regularly goes for £75 to £110 on Ebay. If you already own a Switch, a similar game in the form of Paper Mario The Origami King has come out to decent reviews (although it's not considered as good as Thousand Door).

The GameCube is a nice little console though, I'd also recommend Zelda Windwaker and Starfox Adventures.

TTYD is one of the most sought after GC games. A copy of that would be more expensive than a gamecube nowadays.

They might eventually rerelease or remake it for the switch, but it's not guaranteed.

I have a copy of TTYD purchased cheap ~15 years ago. It's worth a lot now.

Do you have a decent computer? A cheaper (although morally questionable) alternative may be to install an emulator and download a copy of the game to play on PC.

Alternatively, as others have suggested, there are several other Paper Mario games on Wii and Wii U that might be cheaper and easier to get hold of.

If you do go for a legit copy of TTYD - consider getting a Wii but be sure to check what model version it is. You want RVL-001 which has Gamecube controller ports and backwards compability. The newer model numbers don't allow Gamecube games to be played. The benefit is that if your TV has a component HD connection, you will be able to use a component HD cable (example here www.amazon.co.uk/Fosmon-C-1036-HDAV-Component-Cable-Nintendo/dp/B00CA8636K/)?tag=mumsnetforu03-21 which will have a much clearer picture than using an old Gamecube in modern day LCD TVs. That's how I play my Gamecube games nowadays.

Good luck!

I should note that the cost of an old Wii (with Gamecube backwards compability) vs an old Gamecube should be pretty similar, so definitely go for a Wii if you go for TTYD - your DS will then be able to play any of the other numerous Paper Mario and other Mario/Zelda/Smash Bros etc games available across both Wii and Gamecube.
