Can someone please help me with online memberships to Playstation and Nintendo

Sorry to sound silly but I need to get my head around them to justify needing them.

The annual costs are very reasonable and the playstation one is currently on offer.

The only real purpose of me wanting these is because I understand some games require it to play them at all, and other games can only be played in story mode otherwise and without an online membership it means you dont really get much out the games.

I am not a massive console user myself and it will be for my child and it will be monitored. He only plays childrens games and always asks, however I worry that giving him online capability will make it easy for him to click on things to purchase them, which I do not give my permission for him to do. I only want to open up the online part of games for him to be able to enjoy the game properly.

Will taking on annual memberships mean he will easily be able to make purchases using my card connected to the account when playing the games online? Splatoon 2 is one of them.

He is very good and has never made purchases before when on the tablet etc but I dont want to take any chances.

TIA x

TheHighestSardine Thank you, I will find that link tomorrow. I’m not at all savvy in these things, which does concern me. I just find that sometimes stuff is written in a language I don’t understand!

SpideyMom · 14/06/2020 15:01

@TheHighestSardine we are really struggling to find the split screen mode in PVsZ welcome to neighbourville. We have 2 accounts on the console, 2 controllers but can't find the two televisions?

Ah, sorry - the notes above are for PvZ, not Neighbourville. I don't have Neighbourville but the Internet says "Make sure both controllers are awake and connected (solid colour light on the back), launch the game, then player 2 holds down square".

They also say it's a sod to find, as the game doesn't mention it anywhere! Here's all the text, in case you have trouble:

"The mode does in fact exist, and all you need to do is connect another PS4 controller and hold the square button.

Unlike Garden Warfare, players have reported not being able to play co-op with guest accounts. This means you will need more than one PSN profile on your PS4."

A guest account is one that's just on the PS4, not one that has a full Playstation Network login.

"Some users have also reported issues with the split-screen failing thanks to there being “no space in the group,” but there hasn’t been a solution shared for this dilemma as of yet other than creating a new account."

So... hopefully that helps!

thank you. We managed it. Honestly don't know how. Think we went into the multiplayer bit then held down square. It was bloody difficult though. Definitely no at easy as they made out.

We did it on my dads computer who has the online membership. We made an account for my son on his console and tried to do it from my sons account and it kept coming up needs an online membership or something along those lines. However worked from my dads and it was set to private mode. We don't have the same message at home though. I have never been asked to sign in. So im confused

Perhaps round at dad's you were using his Playstation Network account and your son's Playstation Network account? While at home, your own new account is just one on the console? I don't know, just guessing.

Here's a link to the game's help pages about making a new account, might be worth trying this at home: answers.ea.com/t5/Bug-Reports/CO-OP-Not-working/td-p/8178182

SpideyMom · 14/06/2020 18:56

Thats great thank you. I now know he absolutely loves the two player mode. Was lovely to see

TheHighestSardine · 14/06/2020 19:03

Ah, that's brilliant! Yes, it's so much more fun than solo for a lot of games. And you get to enjoy time with him doing something that's not demanding of your mental efforts too Grin

SpideyMom · 14/06/2020 19:04

He said he cant wait to play it again but it has to be 2 player now lol

SpideyMom · 16/06/2020 15:53

So @TheHighestSardine I don't understand. We can't play local 2 player at home. I've set up a new user on my account. But when my son goes in to the multiplayer portal it says neither him or the other user has the online functions to play multiplayer and then takes him to the ps plus page. So i looks like it can only be played on single play without someone on the computer having a membership. Annoying really as the box does say 1-2 players

OP posts:
TheHighestSardine · 16/06/2020 16:52

:( That sucks! The game support FAQ just says "player 2 holds square", no mention of prereqs like a subscription.

Have you tried just starting a game then player 2 holds square, skip the whole portal thing? Maybe that's only for online.

Splatoon 2 is great fun and the team games with random people perfectly safe.

Playing Mario kart online is also fun and again, no opportunity for anyone to interact with you. Switch parental controls are really good - it's very family friendly

SpideyMom · 16/06/2020 17:06

@TheHighestSardine oh you have been so helpful, honestly. I cant thank you enough. It's worked. I just had to made an EA account for myself. What a relief. I was actually thinking I will reluctantantly have to pay for a membership. Thanks again

OP posts:
SpideyMom · 16/06/2020 17:16

@Clymene I'm definitely getting him the Nintendo Membership. Comments on this thread have made me feel more comfortable about it. I've found out one of his best friends pretty much has the same games collection him, and he is getting Splatoon 2 for his birthday too. I was going to get the membership anyway as Splatoon looks too good to return.

So with the online playing of these games, are you playing against randoms or friends? It sounds like other players in the game have no interaction with you which is perfect, and I know this will be the same when playing with friends but can specifically play against a friend on switch games or not?

OP posts:
TheHighestSardine · 16/06/2020 18:19

Oh, excellent news!

On most other multiplayer switch game there are 'lobbies' where you can get together with your friends - one person opens a lobby, then all their friends can see it and choose to join. Only friends can see it, only friends can join.

Then there's Animal Crossing, where you go to the airport and ask the dodo behind the counter to open the gates to your friends, then they can see it and fly to your island. Animal Crossing is excellent.

There are some other special cases - Fortnite on the Switch uses your Fortnite account friends list not the Switch one I think, and of course you're playing against 99 or so other randoms anyway so it's a mix. Again, you can't interact with non-friends except by guns!

SpideyMom · 16/06/2020 18:59

He has said he isnt sure about Animal Crossing. Ive also been told by someone else that he may not like it because there is no end result. You are just building arent you? My DS loves the achievement of moving up levels and/or winning

OP posts:
Clymene · 17/06/2020 22:30

I don't think he'll like animal crossing. My son likes the idea of it but loses interest quickly.

You can play with friends on Mario kart and splatoon 2 if you are friends

Clymene · 17/06/2020 22:31

Sorry that sentence is totally garbled! I mean if you are friends on the switch with people, you can play with them in splatoon.

SpideyMom · 18/06/2020 08:13

Yes thats what I've been told my son will likely do, so im going to leave that one. He much prefers the games where there's an outcome e.g moving up levels/winning etc
