Oculus Rift 12 year old?

On DS xmas list is oculus rift or PS4 (he doesn’t expect either as he knows they are expensive)

Oculus rift says 13+ and looking into this it’s for eye strain, but shouldn’t be an issue if just playing for a short time which he would be. Does anyone’s child younger than 13 play this occasionally?

He already has an Xbox and only wants a PS4 so he can play fortnite with his friends that have a PS, which seems such a waste of money.

I just asked my ds about this (he plays fort nite on the Xbox). He said fortnite is cross platform but you can't cross platforms between Xbox and PS4 sadly. However if he has access to a laptop or computer, he could download fortnight, plug in his controller and then he could play cross platform with people on PS. Maybe an option if you don't want to fork out for a PS4 purely for that reason.

Hi , yeah thanks. He’s got it downloaded on his iPad and switch too so I’m not sure why he’s not able to connect with them through that - unless he’s just not thought about it...

You can't play cross platform between ps4 and switch

A ps4 would allow him to play spiderman which is fun and age appropriate.

They're about £170 second hand.

They have VR headsets which might offer a similar experience to the oculus rift

The recommendation for those is age 12 I think.

So can ipad and PS4 cross over? He does have an old laptop of mine but it’s really unreliable so doubt it would do.

The only game he’s interested in just now is fortnite 🙄

PS4 with VR is an option, but combined they’re are more expensive than the rift. We generally buy new tech so we have guarantees etc.

I do sympathise because my ds is 12 also and fortnite seemed to take over his life for a bit! 😫. Although I don't know if his interest is waning because he doesn't seem to be spending so much time on it recently. Mine wanted a pc for his birthday (I knew it was just for fortnite because it's supposedly better) but I had to say no because the whole family could go on holiday abroad for the cost of one of those gaming pcs!

They probably are more expensive combined, but you could split it and do the PS4 for now and the VR attachment for it at a later date perhaps? He would then be more likely to be 13 and it might get more use than the Oculus.

We have let DS 9 have a go on DH's but only very briefly and sparingly.

From the chat above it looks like you're not aware: The Rift isn't a device by itself, it needs a medium/high end gaming PC to plug into. So unless you've already got a less than three year old PC in the house with a £300+ graphics card in it, either drop the Rift off the list or budget £800 on a new PC/upgrades as well as the £400 for the Rift.

It's the same as the way that the PSVR is an addon for a PS4.
