I thought it would be nice to continue on the discussion about board games.

Our favourite game is 7 wonders.

Our favourite card game is Bohnanza.

We are currently learning to play Puerto Rico.

Anyone else.

I have found my people!

Munchkin is my all time favourite. Different every time.

King of Tokyo is a close second - short, pacey, fun.

OH has just bought me Cash N Guns for my birthday so looking forward to playing that.

Have also played longer games like Firefly and Arkham Horror, which I enjoyed but don't own.

Chillywhippet · 03/08/2016 09:40

Great to see the thread ticking along.

Have had a read back and determined to crack Dominion. We always fail to get to grips with it. This is despite my DC being mostly teens who are really into card games at local games shop. I'm not sure what is going wrong.

We have like loads of games but little time to play Sad

Last Christmas we bought Lords of Waterdeep, Cash n Guns, Blokus and Love Letters. Great.

We are a family of 6 but DH and DC1 really only play chess, cards, Qoridor. Although we did get DH to play, win and enjoy Cash n Guns. The rest of us will try most things. Kids aged 10 to 20.

Thinking ahead to Christmas wish list I'm after some recommendations please:

Which coop? We only have some for tiny kids (Go Away Monster, Little Orchard, Max are all great) so need something for teens and up.

Which TIcket to Ride?

We don't have Settlers of Catan and our local shop has a Star Trek version - any thoughts?

New little card games? (Not big like Dominion Blush)

vikjul · 03/08/2016 10:18

Port Royal is a brilliant little card game, we have been playing it all summer. Plays 2-5, no setup time, combination of push your luck and light engine building. Great fun, very addictive!

vikjul · 10/08/2016 10:41

Have now ordered the following small games and am waiting in happy anticipation! I am forever looking for something that will appeal not only to DH, DS(10) and myself, but also to DD(7) who is less strategically minded.

Best Treehouse Ever (simple drafting card game with great art)
Pickomino (dice push your luck, thought it might help improve DD's addition skills)
Get Bit
Hanabi

I am also considering Dragonwood and am encouraged by the endorsements up-thread! I have heard mixed reviews though. Anyone disappointed by this?

Cagliostro · 13/08/2016 17:26

Hello everyone, I am glad the thread is still being posted on!

We played Forbidden Desert for the first time today. It is quite complicated, but I think it's one of those games where once you've learned the process, it's really simple, IYSWIM? DH, DS (nearly 7) and I played.

I am itching to buy more games. Sigh.

Cagliostro · 13/08/2016 17:30

Oh by the way I continued my games inventory and we got up to over 170. Blush I'm thinking about putting them into some kind of database (home ed ICT project :o).

Also we tried Marrakech recently. WOW. It's a really simple game - I think having read the rules during our first game, I won't need to look again - but there's a lot of strategic thinking required to get winning techniques I reckon. And... it's BEAUTIFUL. The little fabric rugs and the coins and...

Chillywhippet · 13/08/2016 20:44

Vikjul, thanks for the Port Royal recommendation. I will have a look.

We are moving house and planning to convert garage. I am planning a cupboard for games (and photos) but mainly the games Blush

Cagliostro · 13/08/2016 21:34

Oooh sounds good!

My problem is that any games storage will have to have enough room for further purchases...

crankyagnes · 16/08/2016 13:01

I'm one of the ones who bought Dragonwood after reading about it on this thread - ds1 loves it, he's really good at mental arithmetic so adds up the dice (up to 6 rolled at a time) to see if his score beats the monster very quickly. He loves the game. I enjoy it, but I'm not sure if it's because of the combination of it using cards and dice that means I find it's a bit mechanical, with less flow than other games. But my heart doesn't sink when he picks it, so it can't be that bad!

We've finally opened Citadels which I bought a while ago - we're both really enjoying it. Easy to learn so you can get cracking on with playing it and nicely made. I like the fact you play as different characters, with different 'special powers' each round.

crankyagnes · 16/08/2016 13:02

Ha, I thought we were building quite a good games collection up over the last year or so - but 170 leaves us standing!

Cagliostro · 16/08/2016 14:31

:o Blush TBF some of them are things like Top Trumps so it's not that bad...

I have decided to actually get rid of some. I know there are a few that in comparison to the rest are a bit lacking (usually stuff I've picked up in a charity shop, rather than something I've obsessively researched before purchase). Now I've made the list my plan is to go through everything and give it a proper try or two, and then we may weed some out if we think 'meh'.

Actually though there are probably about 10 we haven't even tried yet! And several we've only played once.

Citadels sounds interesting - suitable for 9 and 7 do you think?

Cagliostro · 16/08/2016 14:33

Glad Dragonwood has been a success too. ISWYM about flow, we do get in a bit of a faff putting various cards down in the right places etc. It's a hazard of games with two decks etc I guess.

I'm going to be starting probability with the DCs and my maths class soon, so Dragonwood will probably (arf) be used for that. :)

crankyagnes · 17/08/2016 17:57

Two of the Citadels characters are thief and assassin and they can exercise their power to steal from or kill another player on their turn - don't know if that would be a bit hit with your 7 and 9 year old. My ds1 (12) likes to steal all my gold but was not impressed when I finally managed to assassinate one of his characters!

The aim is to build 8 buildings, which cost various amounts of gold. On your turn you either choose to take more gold or another building card, then you can build something if you like. You play as 2 characters per round so you can save your gold for your next character to build something more expensive - in my case, assuming ds1 hasn't robbed or assassinated them first!

We like it AND it comes in quite a small box and the cards/pieces of gold are good quality so that's good too.

crankyagnes · 17/08/2016 17:57

big not bit, sorry

Cagliostro · 18/08/2016 00:16

Thanks! It does sound intriguing. Maybe a bit advanced for now. But it's on the wishlist for future consideration :)

Cagliostro · 18/08/2016 11:51

My desperation to buy a new game is ramping up and up!

I just made a separate wishlist on Amazon called 'Most Wanted' - for the games I am prioritising. So far I've added:

Pandemic (I've played this before)
Flashpoint (ditto)
Roll for the Galaxy
Tokkaido
Tatsu
Cacao

Anyone played Barragoon? Looks nice.

Cagliostro · 20/08/2016 23:59

DS opened some of his birthday presents early today (we're staying at my mum's) - main one being the Thunderbirds co-op board game. Chosen by me and paid for by my dad as he doesn't like choosing!

DS is VERY excited. We've had a look inside and I've read the instructions. I must say it looks brilliant. Complicated but brilliant. The set up reminds me of Pandemic (only played that once but loved it).

Now the question is can we persuade my parents to play it with us tomorrow..? They are not particularly gamey people!

AmberGreyson · 22/08/2016 13:04

I seldom play board games. I have Dominion, Smallworld and Bang. Usually I am very busy at work. I have time only for small flash games such like Angry birds or Fruit ninja, www.friv4online.com/ . Just to kill time.

Cagliostro · 22/08/2016 13:20

So yesterday I was doing my "I'm bored and want to buy stuff" thing, where I search board games on ebay in case of bargains.

This is one of the games I found. Somehow I don't think it'll be on anyone's recommended list...

game

Cagliostro · 22/08/2016 13:31

Thanks for the link Amber - Super Type looks like it will be helpful for the DCs. :)

Considering Dino Hunt for DD (9) at Christmas as she's dinosaur mad at the moment. Or any other decent dino games would be good. We already have Super Tooth.

FeelingSmurfy · 23/08/2016 21:24

Looking for a gift for my friend, I know she got pandemic for her birthday and really likes it, is it worth getting her an expansion pack? I'm not sure what it adds to the game

Cagliostro · 23/08/2016 21:53

I'm not sure, as I've only played Pandemic once (loved it). I think there's one where you actually play as the disease, trying to take over the world! Not sure if that's an expansion or a standalone game.

Have a look at Flashpoint - it's cooperative so a good bet if she likes Pandemic.

FeelingSmurfy · 24/08/2016 00:27

Thankyou, that does look good Smile I'm going to get that for her and her partner for Christmas

Cagliostro · 29/08/2016 12:15

Fab :o

We've played Thunderbirds a few times now. Won once. It is complicated and difficult to win! But a really great game. We've played Forbidden Desert more too.

I decided to start going through the games list I wrote, because I am determined to get rid of some that aren't that great. So far I've just highlighted the ones we know we definitely want to keep, without needing to try them again. The other ones are going to be tried at some point so we can see if they're worth getting rid so as to make space for more games obviously :).

(the above being the ones we are absolutely, no need to think about it keeping)

Obviously I've since added Thunderbirds to the list and also all the Top Trumps and Brainbox games as they're always popular with the DCs.
