I thought it would be nice to continue on the discussion about board games.

Our favourite game is 7 wonders.

Our favourite card game is Bohnanza.

We are currently learning to play Puerto Rico.

Anyone else.

......and back to £13.94. Yo-yo-ing throughout the day. Grab it while you can (of course everyone here owns it already!).

BuildersBum · 22/03/2016 20:17

I think there's been a reprint of Pandemic Legacy (want, Want, WANT), so I figure they're price promoting Pandemic a lot.

Caught Patchwork at less than £17 the other night, but it's 2 - 4 weeks delivery so I'm not 100% sure we'll get it, but it's thanks to this thread I got turned on to it.

Has anyone played Dominion?
We picked up a few games at a bring & buy last week, including Dominion. OH had spoken to worker in a Games Cafe a few weeks back about trying Game of Thrones card game, as it's two player and Dominion was recommended as an introduction to that type of card game. We haven't tried playing it yet, as it feels like a scary leap from board to purely card . . . and so many of them!

We counted all the cards today and they're all there, plus one, except the Randomizer Cards . . . . . not read the rule book or watched any videos yet . .. . are these cards integral? Are we doomed or would it be easy to fudge or buy replacement cards?

Trouvere · 23/03/2016 09:13

I ordered Patchwork too when there were 4 left in stock, so fingers crossed. Never played Dominion - the closest I've got to a deckbuilder is the free Star Realms app.

Trouvere · 23/03/2016 21:31

Patchwork back down all the way to £16.15 (2-3 weeks wait, though), and Indigo at £16.99. Come on, Amazon, how about a game I don't already own? And no, I don't think WWE Superstar Showdown counts, even at £6.10.

crankyagnes · 24/03/2016 07:14

Patchwork in on my games wish list because I've heard it's a good 2 player game .... I'm tempted.

Just got Lost Cities, the card (not board) game, though. It's a 2 player game by the same person who dreamed up Battle Line and so far, we love it! Like Battle Line, it's easy to learn, which is always an advantage. The cards are attractive too, if quite large.

Are we the only people who don't have Pandemic?? The only co-operative we've played is Forbidden Island and altho we quite enjoyed it, it isn't one of my favourites. I must admit I struggle a bit with the idea of working with instead of against my opponents Grin

prettygirlincrimsonrose · 03/05/2016 19:19

BulidersBum there are free apps that let you pick cards at random so as long as you've got 10 of each action card then you're fine. Really like Dominion and hopefully it's something you get into (and then there are expansions, strategy forums, an online version...)

BuildersBum · 06/05/2016 08:47

thanks prettygirl
Dominion is the last of our new unplayed games . . . .. hadn't realised that til I read this . .. any idea of what to search for an app?

I lied, still got 'Priests of Ra' to play too.

Last few weeks we've learnt / played -

Scoville
Parfum
Camel Up
Alhambra

I'm after a recommendation for which Gamewright card game to get next, please.
We have Sushi Go and Sleeping Queens, (& Love Letter), 2 adults and an almost 7 year old will be playing.

Cagliostro · 17/05/2016 23:53

Hello all!

Namechanger here, bumping the thread as we've booked our tickets to UK Game Expo 2016! Ridiculously excited. :o :o :o We're staying up there for a few days for various museums etc. And our friends are joining us for the convention too so that'll be great. Wondering how much room to leave in the suitcase for new acquisitions Wink.

Cagliostro · 17/05/2016 23:55

Builders when DD got Sleeping Queens last Christmas, DS got Super Tooth, and that's gone down really well.

DD's birthday is next month and one of her presents is Banana Split which looks interesting.

prettygirlincrimsonrose · 18/05/2016 00:02

Builders searching for Dominion Card Game gives you a few options

Just played Game of Thrones at board game group. Seems like quite a well-balanced strategy game and one I'd like to play again.

BuildersBum · 01/06/2016 13:23

Tsuro ios app 79p

German Carcassonne big box £34.93 on Amazon.

Wink
BuildersBum · 01/06/2016 13:28

Sorry I've been on holiday and not checked back here, before going on a amazon / flubit rampage Grin I settled on Rat A Tat Cat as the card game.
Thanks for suggestions though.

Cagliostro very jealous of the Expo trip. We seriously considered it, but decided we wouldn't have enough dosh to purchase everything we'd want to . . . . what with holidays and birthdays and stuff . . . . please come back with a full report.

Thanks prettygirl will have a google Smile

NatashaRomanov · 02/06/2016 21:08

We are here for Games Expo!
Staying in the Hilton thanks to a friend. Husband is playing in the Attack Wing nationals tomorrow, while little girl and I explore the Expo. Then he is returning on Sunday to look around for himself.

Have a long list of games to look for, though I have been advised to avoid the bring and buy area!

Top of the list is Terror In Meeple City, Ticket To Ride UK and Pensylvania, and possibly Patchwork.

Exposition · 03/06/2016 01:27

Hi, quick NC here, too!
We're going to all three days of the expo, really looking forward to it. DH drew up a huge list of what he wants to buy Hmm but then said later he'll be happy if he only gets 10% of it.

We really don't have room for any more games!

Bring and Buy was hellish last year- queues were crazy, so we didn't go in (our DC were 9 and 6 last year).

DC are apparently dressing as an elf and an hobbit- so I foresee a day of me carting round cast-off cloaks, tops, assorted other clothing, as no doubt they'll be too hot, and lots of food. (DD spent most of last year complaining she was hungry, grrr)

Exposition · 03/06/2016 23:44

Well our first day was a good one. We tried quite a few games- battle sheep, codenames, qorridor. We liked them all, but the children found codenames a little hard. DD wants to buy battleship, but DS wasn't as keen.
They played two children's Rpgs which they have never done before, and absolutely loved them. DS couldn't stop talking all the way home, inventing his own Rpgs, and RPG/board game crossovers.
We met some really lovely cosplayers (did anyone see Baymax from big hero 6?)

Exposition · 05/06/2016 23:57

Oof- was too tired to post yesterday.
We had a great weekend!
We played:
Machi Koro
Völuspá
The Train Game
Battle Sheep
Pylos
Qoridor
Codenames
King of Tokyo
Sheriff of Nottingham
Star Realms
a safe cracking game that I don't know its name

I think DH bought 1 game from his list, but we bought lots that weren't on there. We have this evening been trounced by Granny at Sheriff of Nottingham! Shock She loved it!

We saw Tom and Sam from the Dice Tower, Colin Baker, and also Reiner Knizia, who is just amazing really. A really great few days, just exhausted now to go back to school.
We just want to play games all day.

Cagliostro · 07/06/2016 23:02

Hi all!

I would love to hear about how Rat a Tat Cat goes.

Expo was great! :) I don't think we'll go every year, as although the tickets themselves are amazingly cheap, it's the travel/accommodation etc. If we lived nearer I think we would.

DCs did enjoy it, but were really flagging towards the end - it was very busy and noisy and busy and hot (did I mention busy? We didn't even attempt to get into the bring and buy bit). I think one year we might try and spend a bit of time there child free if we can.

However DS (6) absolutely loved playing the giant Castle Panic. DD (nearly 9) was a bit overwhelmed I think and spent a lot of time with the marble run and story cubes in the family zone. Still, they did very well, and in the end we had loads left of our budget and said they could choose any game each. DD chose Brainbox Science and DS chose Robot Turtles, which we've been playing a lot today. DD also spent some pocket money on a gorgeous little hand painted astronaut meeple. :o

We kept well within our budget and bought four - Marrakech and Iota, which I've been looking for for ages, and we each chose a totally new (to us) one:

I just kept walking past the Backspindle stall, where they were playing Codinca - it's pretty new, and I have to admit it was the beauty of the playing pieces that made me yearn for it caught my eye. I find aesthetics very very important when choosing games - it needs to be a joy to handle, IMHO! Anyway you have to swap and flip tiles to make particular patterns. Right up my street.

DH chose Dragonwood, as he'd been watching people play it and figured it'd be good for maths - it's really good. A nice intro to card/dice battles I think, as you have to figure out whether to risk attempting to capture creatures etc. I did laugh when I saw that one of the cards is a cute bunny - reminded me of Mystic Warlords of Ka'a which they play in Big Bang Theory (which is itself based on other things I guess, but I don't know much about those type of card games).

I have to say, as well as finding games I DID want to buy, it was also very helpful to play some games that I can now strike off my enormous wishlist (ok wishlistS, I have loads for different categories of game...). We played Quoridor, and while it was a nice game, I won't be buying it - it's too similar to Lego Minotaurus which we play a lot. We tried Concept, which keeps coming up on my Amazon Recommendations, but although it was fun and I can appreciate that it's a very interesting, er, concept (!), it's really not my thing. There was a balancing game, Chickyboom, that I thought looked really interesting, but it was far too easy, so my DCs are too old for it to be worthwhile. Fruit Salad was a little card game that just isn't the kind of game I'm into, and dare I say not very nice visually. [snob] I also tried Burger Boss which was interesting, but quite similar to a lot of other games, and [snob again] not 'nice' enough to really make me love it.

We played Quadropolis and Five Tribes, both of which I've seen recommended. Quadropolis I was like WTF Confused until we'd played a couple of rounds, and I think if I played a bit more I would really get it, and enjoy it a lot. Five Tribes, I'm not sure really. We didn't play a full game as it was taking so long and we were all rather confused. Absolutely beautiful with all the little wooden pieces, but there were a heck of a lot of elements to it that were quite overwhelming. Perhaps playing it in a quieter place it would've been better. We did ask if there was a way to simplify it at first (like when we started with Ticket to Ride [Europe] we didn't bother with the station pieces at first) but there wasn't any clear way to do that.

Now the question is, I was given a voucher when I left my job last week - do I spend it on more games...?

Cagliostro · 08/06/2016 00:39

Oh and yes DH and the DCs saw Baymax! I didn't though, I was gutted as I love Baymax I may be nearly 30 but I have a cuddly one. :)

Any thoughts on Munchkin? I saw someone wandering around with a Wizard of Oz version... tempted. But have never played it.

Cheezewhizz · 08/06/2016 01:16

I love munchkin. Takes a while to get the hang of but great fun. We simplify it for the kids at the moment but will go to usual rules soon.

I am looking for some new card games to take away with us if anyone can help.

We have uno, exploding kittens, fluxx as well as pictionary, scrabble and cluedo card versions. I would also be open to game suggestions with normal cards.

Cagliostro · 08/06/2016 01:47

Thanks :)

Our current favourite card games are Super Tooth, Sushi Go, Sleeping Queens and Aquarius. I also love Set but my family won't play it with me :(

Cagliostro · 08/06/2016 01:49

Oh and I reckon Dragonwood will become a firm favourite card game, and also Hanabi.

crankyagnes · 08/06/2016 10:51

We've been playing a lot of Agricola ACBAS recently - altho we found it quite hard to learn it's been well worth it. The little animals and other wooden pieces are lovely to handle - I agree with Cagliostro there, it really adds to my enjoyment when the game is well made and/or attractive to look at.

We have two new games - Dungeon Petz and Smallworld. We found Dungeon Petz quite tricky to get our heads around to start with - you buy and grow monsters, build cages to keep them in, put them in exhibitions and sell them. In a way it's like Agricola ACBAS in that you need big/strong enough cages to keep the creatures in, but in Dungeon Petz they can fight back, have angry outbursts/magical accidents and so on. So we're still working out how best to play that, but I think we'll enjoy it once we have a better handle on strategy.

Smallworld has been much easier to learn and we're enjoying that - well, ds1 is, he's wiped the floor with my poor civilisations every turn! I shall be looking on youtube for tutorials later, to try to learn some hints to help me strike back Grin

crankyagnes · 08/06/2016 10:57

Oh and it's really interesting to hear all about the Expo from Exposition and Cagliostro, I'd love to go but don't see that happening for a good few years so it's great to hear about it all from you Smile

Cagliostro · 08/06/2016 12:08

Maybe one year we should have a Mumsnet Expo Meet Up :o

DCs have requested to play more Robot Turtles today so that's good. I'm hoping we might give Dragonwood a go with them (so far only DH and I have played) if DH gets home from work on time. DD has been in a 'board games are boring' phase recently Shock (basically she finds strategy a lot harder than her little brother, so it's really more frustration/fear of losing than boredom IYSWIM) but she seems to be out of that since the Expo.

Intrigued about Agricola, I've heard a lot of good things about that.

I am in charge of choosing the family board game this Christmas (we take turns, DH chose Castle Panic last year which was a brilliant choice) and I'm not sure what to get yet. I'd thought about Marrakech but TBH when I saw it at the Expo at a good price I just couldn't resist any longer! It's so pretty, I may have spent a while looking through the pieces yesterday and stroking all the little fabric mats. Blush

I've been yearning for Tokaido for a while (anything Japanese themed is guaranteed to catch my eye) but it looks like it might be a bit complex and I want it to be something child friendly. I really want Flashpoint too, but I'd rather choose a game that's new to us IYSWIM (a friend has it).

Cagliostro · 08/06/2016 12:57

I may have just bought second hand copies of Priests of Ra and Tabula for, erm, educational purposes

I was supposed to be reining it in after the Expo...

Anyone played Roll for the Galaxy?
