Advice needed on which console for dd8 and ds5

Having been quite into games many moons ago, loved playing tomb raider and super mario on my PC and Nintendo, I now feel very out of touch as to what console would be best for my dc for Christmas. (They have so many toys, thought this could be a great joint present that takes up less space!)

Dd8 plays minecraft on her dads iPhone and ds4 almost 5 just plays the odd game for preschoolers on my phone, so neither have much experience in playing games. Dd just has a little go on her friends wii.

Can anyone recommend which console might be best and one that would grow with them in terms on games they might want to play in a couple of years or so, though I imagine they are similar types until teens want to play more grown up games. I also don't really know the differences in 360 and x box and wii and whatever else you can get.

Can anyone please please post their experiences or any online advice review type places as I don't know which to buy. (And I think the minecraft thing is confusing me as dd plays it fine of phone but couldn't cope with pc so it doesn't have to be able to play minecraft).

Did she enjoy her playing on her friend's Wii? Just thinking if you enjoyed Mario years ago, there are newer Mario games you might enjoy now and could be fun to share with your dc. My ds loves watching Mario kart and some of the platformers (especially when they jump, apparently that's hilarious). What kind of games do you think they would like? Lots of kids (old and young) liked the Wii sports games too, and good for when other adults are over too.

Yes, I am thinking the wii u games might be the best for their age group...

I read your title as you having 8 DDs and 5 DSs! And was wondering if at least 13 children was an MN record!

Then realised that if you had so many children, you'd have plenty of advice from the older ones about current tech. And probably meant DD(8) and DS(5)

I need more coffee, probably.

Wii is brilliant but I find we go through phases of playing it and then not playing it for a couple of months in our house. Though is great as it's also tiring to play.

Have you thought about a nintendo ds (not the 3d one though) ? My older nephews 9 and 14 still play on theirs I still enjoy playing on mine too. I think the range of games are brilliant lots aimed at younger children too.

I think the Wii U would be a good console for them. Some very good games suitable for children on there and you can buy more in the Nintendo eShop online.

Not sure where the Wii U will be in two years though, but it will certainly be good for this year and into next.

I'm looking forward to the next console Nintendo bring out, largely because they're keeping it so under wraps. Nintendo have always been really innovative so their console reveals are usually really compelling to watch.

On a WiiU you'd be able to play WiiU and Wii games so definitely a good start - especially as lots of Wii games are a bit cheaper now. And the Mario games for the WiiU are really good. Yy to 3ds as well, you need to be 7 to use the 3d function (my niece tortured her younger siblings by refusing to let them watch her game until they turned 7, but in fairness it was the only way she got any peace from them) but there is a ds available without it too. I take my 3ds everywhere because it's so easy to pick up and play when you're waiting for appointments or a friend in a cafe - not that I'm addicted to gaming or anything...

Thanks peeps, so no one is suggesting other consoles might be better?

And no, I don't have 13 kids! I can barely cope with two!

Hello. No advice I'm afraid, but also after some answers to this question. We have an old wii which ds (6) likes playing Mariokart on. For Christmas he had asked for the lego Jurassic world game, and I've now realised that wii games are no more so looking like we need a new console if he ever wants newer games.....

MadeMan · 28/09/2015 21:26

I would recommend getting him (and all yourselves) a Wii U console for christmas Letitgo. Splatoon is the most fun you can have online at the moment in my opinion; Mario Kart 8 is also really good, plus you can draw stuff on the controller and upload the pictures to show off on Miiverse! Smile

We have every console known to man - except the wii-U as that came out after DSs had moved on.

I'd stay away from Xbox One and PS4 for the moment as I don't think the cost is worth it at their age and the games are very expensive with not a big back catalogue so you'd be looking at a lot of new releases at £50 a shot.
Wii - U is definitely aimed at the younger age group - probably ideal for for what you are looking for if it is basically the same as the wii (as I say it's the only one we don't have) My two did enjoy the wii. Their first console was a PS2 with the eye-toy and I think that was more versatile at the time as there was a large back catalogue of games that they could pick up for buttons.

From that point of view, I think a 2nd hand PS3 would suit you pretty well too, it's a decent console with plenty of options and you can get a camera type experience with it too for interactive play - also works as a blue ray player.

The xbox 360 with kinect, also good but you need a bigger area for it to work than you need with a wii. Not so good if space at a premium. again there is a hug back catalogue of games for the xbox but I'd say fewer of them are aimed at younger children than the PS3 or wii. I'd also say that the console is maybe not as robust as the PS3. Kinect is better than the PS3 equivalent though if you have the space for it to work well.

My DSs mainly do PC gaming now,, but we do have a PS4 and Xbox one and all the handhelds to if there is anything you want to ask :)
