Xbox game suggestions please for mature DS (10) who seems older than his years - but is still 10 nonetheless

DS (10) loves his gaming (mostly on Xbox). But it feels like we've hit a bit of an awkward age/stage, a no-man's-land between little kids' games and the horrors of Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty, etc, which are definitely off-limits for years yet.

DS raced through the LEGO games from age six and now finds them boring and too easy and for a year or so, hasn't bothered getting the new releases. He's enjoyed Forza racing games and FIFA but has taken these about about as far as he can. He likes Minecraft, but not all the time. He's chomping at the bit for a new game.

What he's craving is an immersive adventure game, a real challenge, with lots of problem-solving and strategy, rich story lines, maybe some interesting history/themes, plenty of creativity, and having to make some brain-aching choices. He wants to feel stretched. And we're stumped.

He wants to play Skyrim and on the basis of what I've read about it, I think he's too young, although I think this is the kind of game concept he's hungry for. The usual shooter suspects with 18 ratings that are full of gratuitous violence are off-limits and DS accepts this. I like a game with a bit of depth.

Although DS is 10, he started puberty two years ago, is the size of a young teenager and is working at level 6 across the board at primary school with a year still to go, so physically and cognitively, in a way, he's older than his years. But I'm acutely aware that he still is just 10.

We're after a game (or games) that's suitable for the emotional/social development and world awareness level of a 10-year-old, but which is nonetheless richly challenging and stimulating.

Any ideas? Thanks.

I would recommend portal and portal 2 as it involves a lot of puzzle solving in 2 you can play with friends and it has no graphic content. Also it is in 1st person. Overall it's a really good game that's addicting and long lasting. It links into the half life story but I wouldn't worry about missing anything as it's only minor hints that are included.Smile

Above post was written by my 15yo ds. He is very knowledgable about Xbox games & the game he has suggested has a 12 rating

DP says try Fable, or maybe Halo. Skyrim doesn't have gratuitous violence in as a rule, however someone could choose to play that way.

dd (aged 12) says Portal 2 and Mass Effect (the age 12 one)

Civ revolution? Loads of history, deep strategy. Not played this version as I'm a PC gamer but I can't imagine it being inappropriate for a 10 year old unless it's too involved. Common sense media seems to think its OK and easier than the PC game.

Oh! I am playing a wonderful game called Child of Light that is rated 10+. Its about a girl, Aurora, the daughter of a duke, who has to save the sun, the moon, and the stars in order to restore order to the world. Great game with a really good story line, and lovely water-colour artwork. Its a turn-base RPG and the story is engaging and charming enough for both adults and children.

Definitely Portal. It's great.

Get The Orange Box as it has Portal 1 on it, Portal 2 is a standalone game. Half-Life 1 & 2 are the other games on The Orange Box and they are good too.

And Halo 3 (I don't know about the newer ones) is also good - it is a shooting game, but you are shooting aliens not humans and there is a bit of a story line Wink

Oh - and if he has Xbox Live you can download lots of games from there - just search strategy.

I bought Monkey Island (yes, a remake of the PC game!) which it sounds like he'd really like. It is completely puzzle based and even as an adult I couldn't complete it without cheating
