Please help, I have recently become allergic to dairy and 80% of my previous diet was dairy.

I really miss cheese, pizza, butter etc and would love some reccomendations

I am a latte addict and have discovered barista oat milk which is amazing!

Everything dairy free is so expensive also- but I am happy to pay for nice tasking safe food

Is it dairy or 'just' lactose? Asking because of AC experience 😊

TheEnglishSystemSucks · 25/10/2024 20:55

Flora plant butter is amazing (prefer it over lurpak).

So I tried goats cheese and it was still really bad and clear whey is also a trigger so assume it's dairy

I had eczema which got gradually worse over the last year to the point it was debilitating and I on / off antibiotics when it got infected

Tried giving up everything / washing powder etc

Gave up dairy and it vanished over night

Since then have had goats cheese and maybe the odd biscuit / cracker and it's been an explosive stomach reaction and the eczema returned

So I am just giving up dairy

DS has a similar issue with dairy. He likes Mozerisella cheese (the one they use for vegan pizzas at Pizza Express and Zizi) and Cheezly mozzarella style, which has proper stretch.

Most supermarkets do decent vegan cakes but also look out for other regular products that are dairy free- lotus biscuits, Oreos, Tesco dark choc digestives, party rings, most bourbons.

Ben and Jerrys and Booja Booja do great dairy free ice cream, but it's v expensive.

Galaxy and Kit Kat now do excellent vegan versions.

My husband is vegan and I'm vegetarian so I've eaten a lot of vegan food. Applewood do a good smoked cheddar cheese, but I've never tasted a vegan cheese that was as good as dairy cheese, I'm sorry to say. It seems like just one of those things that can't be truly replicated.

However I have had lots of good vegan alternatives. Oggs do great vegan cakes and treats. M&S do amazing vegan choc chip cookies.

Sorry - didn't mention the pizza! My husband's fave is Chicago Town stuffed crust vegan pizzas.

Your stomach issues aren't reading like a dairy allergy OP.
'Dairy allergy ' usually signals CMP allergy which isn't triggered by goats cheese. Have you tested for lactose? If this turns out to be a lactose intolerance you'll be able to halve the cost of the foods you liked before. Plus lactose free cows milk dairy products are still high in calcium and other nutrients, so definitely worth a try!

If you're looking for pizza, I'd recommend "One Planet Pizza Stonebaked Spicy Peppernomi Plant-Based Pizza" which you can find in Asda, also in Morrisons you can buy their "Crosta & Mollica Ready To Top Pizza Base With Tomato Sauce", so you can add your own cheese and toppings!

Swedish glace ice cream is vegan £3ish and really nice treat
Asda frozen vegan pizza with hummus and veg is not good!
Naturli spread /block is good
Iceland do a balti pasty ( 2pk) for £1 that's quite spicy and cook well from frozen

The protein in cows milk and that in goats milk are extremely similar, so many people react to both. The only significantly different animal milk protein is camel, but that's hardly commonplace in most the world.

Pizza - For supermarket, Dr Oetker Ristorante Vegan Margherita. For takeaway, Papa Johns.

Cheese - Cathedral city plant based.

Butter - Flora plant butter.

Milk - I use Oatley in tea and Alpro soya for smoothies.

Yogurts - Alpro protein red berries and Tesco plant chef plain/Greek style

Tofu is great for calcium intake which you’ll need to be mindful of.

MumChp · 23/12/2024 14:32

You need to find out if is lactose or milk protein or both.

A lot of people have only a lactose intolerance and if so you can buy a lot of lactosefree products.

Vegan magnums are good too.

PigInADuvet · 02/01/2025 07:08

Is it just dairy you're avoiding or are you vegetarian as well? Because a lot of the vegan pizzas naturally have meat replacement products on which most non vegs aren't that into. That said, the Meatless Farms ham and mushroom pizza is my new favourite (as a vegan).

Otherwise, making your own (ready made base, sauce, toppings then vegan cheese) may be an alternative? If so, the cathedral city plant based cheese is probably the best sub. Comes in a block, grated and slices but I find the block grated at home melts better than the pre-grated version. Lower temperature, longer time gives the best melt.
