Doing a big party on Saturday and added up the numbers - it’s about 50 people!!! Argh

all salads will be vegan and DH is BBQing pulled pork so what amazing vegan “main” can I do to make the omni’s jealous? I’m vegan and DS is pesci and I know of at least 10 others who won’t eat pork…..

Jackfruit something! Jackfruit would be great for a BBQ, takes on flavour well and easy to find in tins on the supermarket
Also chickpea mash ( loads of variations, it's like tuna mayo but better!) it can be eaten as a side of in a sandwich/ wrap .

If there’s room on the bbq, then these quesadillas https://www.georgeforeman.co.uk/recipes/vegan/vegan-spiced-sweet-potato-quesadillas#

Or katsu tofu burgers https://vegnews.com/recipes/vegan-katsu-burgers-wasabi-mayo

I’ve cooked these oyster mushrooms on the barbecue a few times and it’s delightful. The smokiness from the barbecue really enhances ur and the mushrooms go a little crispy. Mushrooms can be divisive though, and I think that’s a thing with incredible vegan food in general, that generally if some people are declaring it incredible it’s probably going to split opinions. Personally I’ve never eaten jackfruit I liked, and could eat mushrooms, aubergine and all the various squashes forever, but I know for a lot of people those ingredients are a huge turn off. If there’s one dish which all fifty people like, either you have the least particular crowd, or it’s going to be a bit uninspiring.

Ixta Belfrage's Crispy Oyster Mushroom Skewers with Crushed Chickpeas

There is a hierarchy of mushrooms, in my opinion, and oyster mushrooms are right at the very top, along with porcini. If you’re not already familiar with the wonders of pan-fried or roasted oyster mushrooms, you’re in for a treat, because this unassumi...

My favourite vegan dish is felafel. You can bbq them up nice and crispy, they are delicious.

Oh this is exactly the kind of thing I’m looking for. I was thinking of doing jackfruit as well in the oven to go with the pork but I’m so bored of always being offered falafel!

Vegan burgers are always nice on a bbq ? And then you can load up on the same experience as the others, with salads, buns, sauces etc

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 25/07/2024 07:50

I don’t eat red meat but love a good bean burger (rather than anything fake meat) so that I can enjoy the BBQ experience!

sashh · 25/07/2024 11:00

Root veg in foil in amongst the coals, either plain of with a bit of oil and herbs. New potatoes work well.

Vegetable kebabs. Onion, pepper, courgette, aubergine.

Corn on the cob.

mitogoshi · 25/07/2024 11:29

Veggie kebabs are always a crowd pleaser for the meat eaters too. Pulled jackfruit would make a good alternative to the pork. Cauliflower BBQ's well

familyissues12345 · 25/07/2024 11:37

Aldi and Lidl do sweetcorn and pepper fritters which are really nice with salad and a dressing. I'm pretty sure they are vegan?

familyissues12345 · 25/07/2024 11:37

I also really like stuffed peppers, vegetable kebabs

This is the problem - making sure the veggie dish is for veggies because I can’t really afford to get in enough if a vegan main to feed the all the omnivores as well!!!

Have you got a heron near you? Mine is the last ten days has had sheese, violife slices, Quorn mini fillets ( you might need to check vegan/ veggie) mighty milk , alpro milk and branded vegan mayo all under a pound ( mayo might have been £1.50)

TheShiningCarpet · 25/07/2024 15:58

Carrot dogs! Bean burgers! Veggie chilli! Mushroom Donburi bowls!

midgetastic · 25/07/2024 16:01

I'm doing veggie kebabs as a side for my bbq - they don't shout vegan main to me

wrinkledstocking · 25/07/2024 16:18

Bean or beetroot burgers are good. / Grilled aubergine tahini dressing…lots of ideas on BBC food food.

SeaToSki · 25/07/2024 16:22

Roast whole portabella mushrooms and then dice and fry up or roast a whole selection of onions, celery, celeriac, peppers etc and add a load of steamed chestnuts. Add some seasonings (middle eastern or mediterranean both work v well) and a glug of red wine vinegar to the diced fry up. Load into the mushroom caps and serve. If you are bored with portabella mushrooms, use a squash half as the ‘vessel’

Wahine24 · 25/07/2024 18:38

Also heron had cauldron tofu for 79p it's usually £2.79 in Waitrose

Citygirlrurallife · 28/07/2024 21:50

Burger would have been good if we hadn’t had 20+ veggies. As it was I marinated tofu for 24hrs and bungee a tray of it in the oven, as usual omnivores hoovered it as well so good job I did enough for 50!
