Advice on vegan cheese

EducatingSillySausages · 11/07/2024 20:07

we are eating more vegan food and Ds is vegan. Please tell me where to buy decent vegan cheese! What we pick up in Tesco smells rank, but out at a vegan restaurant tonight they had what looked like melting cheddar on a burger and it tasted great. They also had a fabulous cheesecake. Where do we buy these things?

My son is mostly dairy free and he really enjoys the Violife cheese - although admittedly it does stink! It melts quite well though
The cathedral city grated one also isn't too bad IMO

Funfaxfan · 11/07/2024 20:10

None. I've been dairy free for 9 years. It's all grim and that includes the pricey nut ones. My advice is to just cook meals that dont require cheese or use mustard powder and marmite to give flavour (not nutritional yeast flakes as they are foul)

henlake7 · 17/07/2024 06:13

I think the applewood smoked one is quite nice.
Although TBH mine has been sat in my freezer for ages!

Blueuggboots · 17/07/2024 06:16

The vegan cheese in Aldi isn't bad. The cheddar style block.

PeriIsKickingMyButt · 17/07/2024 06:22

Applewood smoked cheese
cathedral city cheddar
lidl vegan feta and vegan Parmesan
if you're feeling flush then la fauxmagerie shamenbert from Waitrose

I have tried quite a few and those are the nicest ones I've tried

MyCatHatesSandals · 17/07/2024 06:23

Vegan cheese is an ultra-processed food. I give it a wide berth.

RampantIvy · 17/07/2024 06:24

DD used to do veganuary and we have tried all the vegan cheeses. The only one that tasted OK was Tyne Chease. We call Violife Vile Life as it has a really unpleasant after taste.

I'm inclined to agree with @Funfaxfan to avoid cheese replacements.

Blackcats7 · 17/07/2024 06:39

They are all disgusting. I must have tried every brand and variety. Literally so bad I had to spit them out. More like fishy margarine than cheese.
If anyone ever comes up with a decent vegan cheese they will make a fortune.

PetrichorSoul · 17/07/2024 06:40

It’s all ultra processed muck.

Phineyj · 17/07/2024 07:42

www.abelandcole.co.uk/macadamia-white-nettle this is pricey but absolutely delicious e.g. if you wanted to make a "cheese" sauce.

Phineyj · 17/07/2024 07:43

www.abelandcole.co.uk/ferme-cashew-fermemtino-spreadable-chives this is also very yummy.

I'm not vegan and will gladly eat this. It's like Boursin but not garlicky.

AGodawfulsmallaffair · 17/07/2024 07:47

Look at I Am Nut Ok. I worked opposite them at a London Farmer’s market and their cheese is fabulous. Expensive, but fabulous, especially their soft cheeses. Also lovely owners.
I’m not vegan but used to bring it home as a treat for my ds who was for a while.

Wahine24 · 24/07/2024 01:49

Julien Bruno is a vegan cheese, often used in catering it's silky and tastes good but also takes on flavour.
Most vegan hard cheese is coconut oil based (I believe) and doesn't hold a great nutritional value, I don't mind violife shreds but really dislike the chederton ( not definite of spelling ) I also don't like it heated as it' can be oily,
Sheese is another brand that seems popular but everyone I know who's tried it seems to have to be near a bathroom afterwards (!!!) sorry if TMI

YapYapMeow · 24/07/2024 02:02

The blocks of cathedral city are nice, similar to cheddar and the only one I will eat.

Oblomov24 · 24/07/2024 02:12

They are mostly poor. All my vegan friends say so.

Brbreeze · 24/07/2024 03:15

Cathedral City is the only one really tolerable in sandwiches/on its own.

There are a few that melt well, the applewood smoked is good.

They have improved loads over the last few years. I try to use them very sparingly though as trying to stick to whole foods mainly at the moment.

whateveryouwantmetosay · 24/07/2024 03:29

OMG. Violife is soooo good. I'm not even vegan and I prefer it over real cheese!

RookieMa · 24/07/2024 04:41

DD loves her cheese and they were giving out free samples of Violife in town recently and she said it tasted really nice. Just the same as normal cheddar

RampantIvy · 24/07/2024 06:33

You are clearly not a cheese lover then Grin

I find that Vile Life Violife has an unpleasant aftertaste reminiscent of vanilla, and is missing the umami taste that decent cheese has.

Wahine24 · 24/07/2024 08:40

I think the cathedral city one is rank! The texture is off and it tastes plastic-y and feety and gets worse when heated

EducatingSillySausages · 24/07/2024 08:49

Thanks all for the advice. We have been testing and really like the Honestly Tasty cheeses. That’s our recommendation!

One of my vegan DC likes Applewood smoked cheese slices. Unlike most supermarket vegan cheese I don't mind it, but the dairy equivalent is nicer and has more nutritional value.

I'm not vegan, but with three long term vegan daughters who aren't sniffy about UPF I eat quite a lot of processed vegan food and can second the recommendation for I Am Nut OK. Expensive per unit weight, but palatable. We also like Mouse's Favourite and Tyne Chease.

PossiblyPertunia · 24/07/2024 09:36

MozzaRisella is an epic vegan mozzarella. You need to order it online but I order all my vegan cheese as you can find much better than in supermarkets (hate the cheesy feet stuff!!).

Blink282 · 24/07/2024 09:40

I really like the Dr Oetker vegan pomodori pizza. Anyone know what cheese they use on that?!

I like Nush cream cheese, but other than that, i’ve not found a good vegan cheese substitute.

Sparklyhat · 24/07/2024 09:42

Not vegan but I like vitalite vegan cheese slices
