Vegan swiss roll

Hi

Has anyone come across a vegan swiss roll please? Preferably one I can buy, not a recipe. Strictly speaking it doesn't need to be vegan, but I need 2 without dairy and 1 without egg...

It's for a kids baking decorating contest, so I don't want to spend a fortune, and I've got enough other prep to do without making swiss rolls. Then I feel it may be my fate.

Or reasonably priced Vegan Colin's that I can strup naked 🤭

Really beat the crap out of margerine and sugar with a wooden spoon, then sifted flour and a bit of room temperature plant milk to get the consistency. Jam is vegan, isn't it ?

Meganmeccano · 03/06/2024 22:58

Oh sorry I misread. Maybe try a bakery esp. If you know one that sells gluten free.

JohnMajorJohn · 03/06/2024 23:07

Gluten is fine thankfully.

Basically, I'm doing a bake off party for my child's birthday. One of the tasks (they can't involve the oven) is to create the best 'Colin' the caterpillar cake. But I've got kids coming with allergies, and now I've got to find an egg free cake, even though swiss rolls are basically egg sponges 😕.
Plonker.

I should have spent more time thinking of this than gingham and bunting and whether I could get a Paul Hollywood lookalike.

I’d be buying something like this and turn them on their side? Sandwich together with more jam and squish it a bit?

Or could you ask the parents to ALL bring a Swiss roll suitable for their dc (so as not to single out the allergies) my h is gf and we are used to this type of request!

Their best chance, if it's purely a decorating contest, is to use slices of bread as the cake. Cake for Swiss roll relies on the egg for both structure and rise. Or they/you could carve a regular vegan sponge cake into a cylinder and decorate that.

This is a good idea.

Or biscuits jammed together with icing?

The child will be so thrilled if they can join in! They will totally understand if it is somewhat different but being enabled to join in will mean a lot

Alternatively this cake is really good for decorating, we always used it to craft fun shaped.cakes.when the children were small

I think I'll be trying out some recipes this week tbh.

I definitely don't want anyone (or everyone) to bring their own, everyone will be provided with everything they need. If that means baking 8 Swiss rolls so everyone's looks the same, then that's what I'll have to do.

A similar size shop bought one for everyone (with the allergy kids having vegan) would have been much easier, but it doesn't sound like it's realistic annoyingly.

A couple of ideas for you:

  1. make Swiss roll shape but using rice crispy
  2. https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/300644089 use dairy free chocolate to hold together some free from mini-muffins.
  3. use Oreos and use chocolate again to make a Swiss roll shape. Oreos are dairy free (from memory vegan).

note some dark chocolate is dairy free and therefore much cheaper. I think lidl dark chocolate is.
hope that helps

Personally, and I mean this kindly and because mine have very serious allergies, but I would always prefer to bring my own or buy one, than cause someone stress or push them outside their comfort zone. Also it's actually less worrying if the food looks a bit different in shape etc as if they are too similar there is a deadly risk of confusion

minipie · 03/06/2024 23:36

I think in your shoes I would try find a different cake (not swiss roll) where you can get similar vegan and non vegan versions. Then invent a decorating task based around that cake shape. Unless Colin has some special sentimental significance.

minipie · 03/06/2024 23:41

Or just give them all vegan cakes to decorate? Again, ditch the colin aspect, come up with a different challenge based on the cake available
