Non-dairy milk for tea?

Hi. What does everyone put in their tea? I'm not all that keen on drinking it black, but the alternatives I've tried have all been too creamy or just seem to colour the tea a bit!

Which ones have you tried so far?

Forgottenmyphone · 14/12/2023 10:55

Oatly Barista

norbert23 · 14/12/2023 10:56

Oatly whole

I'm not vegan anymore, but have never been able to stomach the taste of cows milk since.
There isn't a perfect replacement, most places seem to suggest oat milk, but I'm not keen. I use Alpro no sugar almond milk, but I had to try switching tea brands to get the most acceptable taste. I went from lifelong Tetley to Twinings English breakfast. You will find your tastes will change and you'll get used to it. I also trained myself to drink black tea, as I found the milks never tasted right when out and about.
I prefer coffee with coconut milk, although Alpro again is the only one that doesn't curdle.

I use califia farms oat milk for everything because I can't be bothered faffing with multiple milks for multiple things.

I have heard that the Alpro "not milk" is good in tea but not tried it myself. Comes in whole and semi skimmed

That Alpro is interesting as it contains iodine, which is missing from most milk substitutes. Although I'm not a fan of oat milk in general.

Tea bag tea is hard to drink black, but a milder tea like Earl Grey or Oolong is nice. Peppermint tea is lovely (Pukka Three Mint is my favourite).

HareSong · 14/12/2023 11:25

I use Tesco's or Sainbury's own-brand soya milk in tea. I find oat milk too sweet, almond milk too thin, and coconut milk too weird.

I don't like the Alpro soya milk range as they add flavourings, and often sweetening agents like apple juice.

In coffee, it's Oatly Barista all the way!

myphoneisbroken · 14/12/2023 11:27

I use Aldi oat milk - it took me a week to get used to it and now I much prefer it. I don't like Oatly or any of the barista ones as I find them too creamy. But the Aldi one is just right.

whiteroseredrose · 14/12/2023 11:36

I use Alpro Soya Light as it is relatively bland.

I think I saw one branded as 'for tea' but may have dreamed it!

Blueuggboots · 14/12/2023 11:44

Oat no added sugar.

Hecho · 14/12/2023 14:46

Thanks everyone. I tend to use own-brand unsweetened oat milk (I've tried a few others, con't really remember off hand, but definitely Alpro almond and Oatly oat and almond). In theory my standard milk should work, but it's not quite right for me. I guess I just haven't given my time to get used to it, and thought there might be a magic milk out there that everyone else is using! The Alpro 'not milk' looks interesting though, I'll keep an eye out for it.

I use oat milk BUT I found that if you put the milk in before you pour the boiling water in then it doesn't end too strong. If I put the milk in afterwards I have to put half a cup's worth in!

Cormoran · 14/12/2023 18:43

I like soya.

GauntJudy · 28/01/2024 13:32

I use the Aldi unsweetened soy milk. I'm quite a fussy tea drinker and think it's pretty nice. It's only about 59p too!

GerbilMum26 · 03/02/2024 04:26

Not vegan, but myself and many others in my family have a dairy allergy.
i used to like unsweetened almond milk, but generally prefer unsweetened oat these days, and somehow my mum likes coconut milk in her tea?!

generally i buy the barista version of whichever supermarket I’m shopping in, unless alpro is on special offer.

on a side note, although most coffee shops etc carry milk alternatives, when going out we like to take little 200ml thermos flasks filled with our milk of choice in.
I use mine for example when i pop into my local library, as it’s currently serving free hot drinks due to being a ‘warm space’

MrsH497 · 03/02/2024 06:07

Alpro my cuppa I found was the best for a tea

Hecho · 05/02/2024 17:48

Since all the suggestions I've been looking a bit more carefully and tried a few alternatives. Alpro my cuppa is the one in my fridge : )
I also like the idea of taking a mini flask!

Cashew milk is fantastic in tea.
Absolute game changer for us. Defo recommend trying.

We use this too, it doesn't split which is key!

Sugar free oatly.
