Getting enough calories into baby

Hello,

I'm not vegan but tend towards a plant based diet and I feed my kids the same. I'm struggling to think of what I can feed my 10mo DS because I think now he's on the move he needs more calories. I feed him he obvious Avacado, Peanut butter, Humous but is there anything else I could give him? We eat quite healthy so lots of veg but I think he needs something more. He's already taken his first steps and spends his entire waking day cruising, climbing and crawling. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Mine mostly ate breast milk only at that age! It has more calories than solid food, so I'd top up with extra feeds or bottles if you're bottle fed.

Otherwise pasta, nuts, plant mills, plant cheese, lentils, beans

Lentils, chickpeas, beans , tofu, quinoa.
Are you giving him B12 and Omega 3s? He NEEDS them.

When my daughter’s weight dropped off a little I blended veg she liked with coconut milk. It worked really well.

Indian recipes tend to be plant based and high calorie. Something like roti with gor and ghee as a snack, paneer (or firm tofu) curries with pureed cashews, ghee and cream. A nice semolina or carrot halwa cooked in ghee and full fat milk, ground nuts and raisins.

Meat. Growing children need amino acids, collagen, B12 etc. that you cannot get from plants.

Which amino acids can you not get from plant sources?

Citations welcome

He doesn't need anything else. But my non vegan, non vegetarian children ate a lot of dal. Easy to make and, crucially, makes you feel like a good parent!

lljkk · 05/10/2023 20:50

What high iron foods does he have?

hobbitonthehill · 05/10/2023 20:58

Why don't you feed your children a normal balanced diet ? Do you realise how much shit is in all those fake vegan foods and milks ?

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 06/10/2023 15:50

Have you tried added olive oil to foods? So if you give him a bit of mashed potato add a little police oil or roast the potatoes in olive oil.

panelbottle · 06/10/2023 15:56

I always thought a plant diet from a very young age impacts height but I may be misinformed

Unabletomitigate · 11/11/2023 07:26

For citations on the specific nutritional gaps of a vegan diet, I can recommned the following book, The Vegetarian Myth, by Liere Kieth. Very well researched.

@Mamabear04 Why do you think he needs more calories?

kikisparks · 14/11/2023 10:58

I tended to vary nuts so some cashew and almond butter etc. For vitamins I use these https://www.vegansociety.com/shop/veg-1-supplements/veg-1-baby-toddler

For iron you can use fortified bread and breakfast cereal- despite being ultra processed a recent study has shown these to be beneficial to health https://www.theguardian.com/society/2023/nov/13/some-ultra-processed-foods-are-good-for-your-health-who-backed-study-finds?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

As others have said, legumes every day if you can.

Ground flaxseed, soaked chia seeds etc for omegas.

VEG 1 Baby & Toddler

VEG 1 Baby and Toddler is a five-month supply of our liquid multivitamin for children aged six months to four years.
