Does Christmas annoy you as a vegan?

Lampedsomeoiks · 14/11/2022 18:42

A post in the AIBU forum resonated with me.

I don't like Christmas because of the death and consumerism of it all. Environment and animals be damned.

Bloody supermarket adverts amp up their food porn presentation to 1,000,000. Dead this, dead that.

It is amplified beyond nauseating and I find it upsetting that these animals, birds, fish (whatever used to move) are seen as part of this so-called celebration. No thought or care is given to them and the horrible existences and deaths they suffered.

I know it goes on all year but it really grinds me down due to the sheer frequency and saturation.

I posted here as I couldn't deal with the ass aching I'd probably get 'out in the wild' of AIBU. Fingers crossed...

@OldWivesTale i have worked in an abattoir. I know the reality of where food comes from.

Well then you are very much the exception. Most people who witnessed this would not wish to inflict it on animals any longer and it would probably make them question eating meat. The problem is the disconnect, the cognitive dissonance that most people have around meat. It's normal because we have grown up conditioned to see eating certain animals as ok, it's totally normalised but then when people actually face the reality of it we usually feel disgusted and sad for the animals. It's a very strange situation.

I can see that someone has PMed me but I can't open the message sorry, nor can I send one. Maybe because I'm on an android, I don't know.

Like I've already said it wouldn't stop me and can guarantee it wouldn't stop other people who eat meat. Face it. People are always going to eat it. You can't force people not to and nothing will stop them. It's circle of life. I enjoy my steak too much.

That was me @OldWivesTale

Just a polite acknowledgment of your understanding on my posts.

I use MN on the Opera browser via Android and it seems okay. Is there an App for MN?

There will be some people who would stop eating meat if they saw the reality of it all just as there would be some veggies who'd become vegan if they saw how eggs are produced etc. But there are also loads, like myself who would carry on. I've worked on a farm. I've seen the realities of it.

Roundmywaythe · 14/11/2022 21:04

Do you mean because Jesus was crucified and that reminds you of killing animals?

MissCrowley · 14/11/2022 21:12

I've been vegan and now back on meat. I did it for 9 months and was ill, I did everything right as far as I could.
Anyway; I'd be a hypocrite if I said the body count bothers me. What annoys me is the waste. If you're going to buy an animal to eat it, then bloody eat it! Don't disrespect it by throwing half of it away.

Yes, I completely understand you.
There is an app for Mumsnet but it doesn't work well for some things.

OldWivesTale · 14/11/2022 21:42

OP, you sound like a kind, sensitive, deep thinking person. I completely understand how you feel but you can only do what you can do and there's no point trying to control everything and everyone. It's very hard, I know. I get very upset too but you have to try not to think about the stuff that you cannot control. Easier said than done, I know. It often makes me feel very sad and hopeless too 😞

Yes I agree with you @Lampedsomeoiks I am vegan too & find the whole culture of meat eating & slaughter disgusting. I do not show my disgust to my meat eating friends because I would just end up in perpetual arguments but I feel your pain & frustration.
I recently went to stay in a self catering farm. There was such a noise the first night, sheep next door field making a racket, it was so weird & distressing. We thought that this must be a fox annoying them.
So a few days later I asked the owner why they had made so much noise, he said it was lambing season, that the baby lambs had been removed from their mothers & the mother sheep were looking for their babies.
This stuck with me, the noise of the cries. It was a terrible noise.
I wonder how many people, if they heard that, would happily watch this then eat a freshly slaughtered lamb? I just don't think that people really have connection to what happens in the farming industry, and connect that to the packets of meat in the supermarket.
(NB) this wasn't when I became vegan, I have been vegan for years)

Thank you for your reply. It is horrific to read. People don't think or care of the distress animal mothers suffer along with their offspring. It really has made me lose care about certain things...

Also, I posted in a vegan thread. What were a huge percentage of replies? Non vegan. I don't shit post in threads that aren't particularly relevant to me. Fuck knows what psychology it all is.

I'm not bothering in this sub forum again. Posters like you are a rarity so thanks for your understanding. I am so glad some others feel the same - even though it is absolutely miserable really.

The lack of empathy people seem to have astounds me. It's so arrogant that we feel we can just take life because we think it's ok.
Humans are a destructive race & people need to wake up to the harm that breeding, killing & eating animals does to the environment, health & above all to the exploitation of using animals in such a disgraceful way.

Pseudonymminymie · 20/11/2022 22:06

I actually agree OP. I'm a vegan, my family won't countenance it even though they enjoy the food I eat when they do eat it with me. I don't get it. It makes me sad but ultimately I have to respect their right to choose.

OldWivesTale · 24/11/2022 09:07

OP, the reason meat eaters all jump on is because deep down they know they are in the wrong; it's a defence mechanism. The vast majority of people say they love animals but then they eat meat. It's cognitive dissonance at its finest.

Unlikely. More like sick of being told what to do. Nobody has the right to dictate what other people should eat. Everyone has their own moral compass and if it doesn't align with yours then, meh. Need to get over it man.

howmanybicycles · 24/11/2022 09:28

Not in the least bit true old wives tale and hugely arrogant to think you know other's motivations. Personally I think vegans are give a hard time but then, as you've demonstrated, some speak in ways which are hugely unpleasant and sadly the respectful ones get tarred by the same brush.
