Meat substitutes that emulate meat too closely

I am vegetarian rather than vegan.
When I eat out I sometimes choose the vegan option ( frequently there aren't many choices), but often find they too are to meaty tasting.
Is this what most vegans are looking for, do you think? Is it just a moral choice?

For me, I just prefer not to eat meat ethically, but also don't enjoy the flavour/texture.

I’m not a vegetarian but am trying to eat less meat. For me the closer fake meat tastes to the real thing the better.

I think restaurants should have options that don’t emulate meat too though. Surely it wouldn’t hurt to have a few options on the menu.

See I don't care about that either.

@PBSam I had heard that in the small print some of these places were saying the vegan burgers are cooked on the meat grills. Which isn't for me. But if it was a 100% vegan pop up that's different.

Again I don't really care about cross contamination either with BK the plant based whopper is cooked on the same grill for the flame taste but the vegan royale are labeled vegan because they are separate.

This is from Burger King's website (co.uk)

The Plant-Based Whopper® is plant-based, however it is cooked on the same broiler as our original Whopper® to delivery the same unique flame-grilled taste and therefore the product not certified by the Vegan Society®.

PoseyFlump · 28/10/2022 07:09

Totally confused! Sorry, I thought you was vegan.

PBSam · 28/10/2022 07:13

I am but I don't care about cross contamination it's not really a concern for me, i get why people do care but I don't. When it had normal mayo I didn't eat it now they use vegan mayo I do.

PoseyFlump · 28/10/2022 07:17

I'm not sure I would interpret cooking a vegan patty on a meat grill 'cross contamination' in the same way as a product that doesn't contain milk but the factory it's made in handles milk?

PoseyFlump · 28/10/2022 07:21

The McPlant on the other hand has been certified vegan.

PBSam · 28/10/2022 07:23

Whatever you want to describe it as I don't care. You do you and i'll do me its not something that bothers me I'm not eating meat I'm not ordering meat and a cow didn't die for my sandwich.

PoseyFlump · 28/10/2022 07:52

@PBSam you quoted my post and said 'see I don't care about that'. So I replied to you as to why I think one is vegan and one is not, so it's quite funny that you're now telling me to 'do me' 😂😂

I had 'bacon' rashers that tasted all too like the real thing. It was difficult as I felt guilty that I like the real thing in terms of taste. I would never eat the real thing and have never been tempted but it made me think more than I'd like to have. Most of the other things I have are not as close so it doesn't bother me as much.

Another gripe, to put it mildly, is the supermarkets (Aldi in particular) making a huge deal out of Veganuary. They set aside a plant-based fridge area, have far more choice, shout how great they are.

Come Feb 1st. Gone. All the plant stuff is back mixed in with meat - I swear on Jan 31st at 10:01pm the staff cannot move quickly enough to mix meat and vegan stuff back together. I will not search through shelves full of death. Also less choice once it all sells as it never comes back again.

Bollocks to catering to those of us who do this every day of every month. Cater to the whims and fads of 31 days instead.

Same goes for McDonalds but I wouldn't touch them with a fifty foot barge pole.

mum2jakie · 11/11/2022 20:28

I dislike the fake meat substitutes in general but must admit to being tempted to try fake bacon! @Lampedsomeoiks what brand of fake bacon did you try that tasted like the real thing?

Sorry I cannot remember a it was a few years ago now. To my taste buds it was uncanny.

mum2jakie · 11/11/2022 20:44

Thanks for responding anyway! Hopefully somebody else might recommend a tasty bacon substitute!

Damnautocorrect · 12/11/2022 10:36

I tried this one Finnebrogue Artisan Plant-Based Bacon.
it was quite nice, richmond one wasn’t bad either. I can’t get my head around the quorn one that you can defrost and re freeze.
