Plant based pasta shapes?

PinchOfVom · 09/02/2022 10:42

Having a brilliant time embracing plant based diet after my initial worries that I’d end up living in pasta and qorn 🤮

Does anybody know if plant based pastas exist ie past shapes made from cauliflower or spinach? I’m trying to chip away at all the unhealthy stuff we eat and find convincing dupes for pasta scoffing kids 👍

Sorry that is a really ridiculous link!

Aldi sell bags of different coloured pastas made from beetroot etc - we have green, yellow and red

You can either spiralize veggies or buy pasta made from things like pulses. time.com/4906359/healthy-pasta-noodles

Personally I just used ordinary pasta and threw lots of veggies in the saucepan so they all cooked together; half a cauliflower, four carrots, head of broccoli - all chopped into pieces of a similar size to the pasta shapes.

Sainsbury's do a not-awful green pea fusilli.
Here

Nothing 'unhealthy' about kids eating normal pasta though.

Yarnivore · 09/02/2022 10:55

Pasta is made from wheat.

Wheat is a plant.

BertieBotts · 09/02/2022 10:56

I think OP means pasta in special shapes like fire engines, letters, Peppa pig heads etc.

I'm sure you can get that kind of thing with just wheat based pasta without egg in if that's what you mean.

daisypond · 09/02/2022 10:57

Pasta is from a plant, though, at least the normal dried pasta is.

Allpenguinsarepingus · 09/02/2022 10:58

Pasta is plant based. It’s made of wheat. It’s not unhealthy. It’s a pretty high carbohydrate choice, with some protein too but only a small proportion of dietary fibre. So it’s good teamed with say, a sauce including some oil or butter, vegetables and a denser source of protein. Kids (and everyone else actually) need calories as well as fibre and micronutrients. Those calories have to come from somewhere. Not everything in a balanced diet needs to be a ´superfood’.

PinchOfVom · 09/02/2022 10:58

No, I’m trying to remove wheat from our diet.
I’m supposed to be gluten free but I find it quite challenging

Oh, just had a look at the nutritional information - the green pea fusilli is higher in calories, fat and salt than normal pasta. The red lentil penne has the same salt and calorific content as normal pasta, and marginally higher fat.

Unless gluten is an issue, I'd stick to normal pasta, it is much nicer and no more unhealthy!

This is the sort of thing I’m looking for

Ah well gluten free is a different thing to plant based. Hope you find something Smile

Quartz2208 · 09/02/2022 12:13

we have both the red lentil and green pea pasta as they are indeed gluten free. DD loves them but they do have a very distinct taste you cant pass them off as normal pasta

Be honest- are they vile? If so I will leave it. I try to only make pasta every few weeks because the gluten isn’t good for any of us. I was quite excited at being able to eat it freely cos my kids love it

I made cauliflower rice last night with tofu satay and they all assumed that they were eating chicken kebabs and rice 😂

Hence all the excitement 😂😂

No they aren't vile at all. As I said DD (13) loves them and is currently sad that we dont have them so she has to have normal pasta to take to school.

They just taste different to normal pasta so you do notice the difference. Once you have gotten used to it its fine

Doveyouknow · 09/02/2022 13:10

If your kids have gluten intolerance then gf pasta would be an option. However if the kids are not gluten intolerant removing it from their diet alongside all animal products makes for quite a restrictive diet. There is nothing inherently unhealthy about gluten.

We have varying levels of gluten allergies, yes. That is why I am asking about the pasta.

My children do have plenty of animal products - they’re not vegan.

Rice is gluten free anyway? This is starting to look like a incredibly restricted diet. Which is hard if it’s medically necessary, and a bit mad if it isn’t.

Soba noodles are usually made of buckwheat, which I believe is gluten free. I really like them, they taste quite nutty. They go well with mushrooms in my opinion.

Mirrorball2022 · 09/02/2022 14:42

I got beetroot pasta in the middle aisle in aldi last year. I’m sure there are more!

My DD is Coeliac and we use GF pasta and I cannot taste the difference tbh.
