Going vegan with bad IBS

I have always wanted to go vegan, I follow lots of plant based accounts online and love the look of all the foods.
However, I have really bad, daily IBS. I suffer from both constipation and diarrhoea and have an extremely sensitive gut with awful gas, acid and bloating everyday.
Has anyone with gut issues gone vegan and had an improvement in their symptoms, I am so worried all the high fibre foods and veg will go through me but really want to go plant based.

In all honesty I don't think it's possible.

I have very active bowels (sorry if TMI but pooing after each meal- a normal, firm poo- is what I often do) as I do eat quite a lot of fruit and veg anyway.

I've recently tried more vegan main meals often with chickpeas or other beans and I really suffer the next day. (My mum is the same.)

All I could suggest for you is to perhaps try some pre and pro-biotics in the hope of improving your gut flora.

In time- it's not ready now- the Zoe app will be able to identify which foods are right for each of us, by analysing our gut health. It's being devised by Prof Tim Spector at Kings College London and is available in the US but not here yet.

Thank you. I do have my reservations due to the fact I have to limited drastically my intake of fruit and veg or I’ll be in trouble tummy-wise. I have an appointment with a naturopath in a few days, hopefully she can help me boost my gut health and maybe going fully plant based will be something I can look into after. mswales Thank you, I will look at those.

I have dreadful IBS but I'm allergic to dairy and stopped being as bloated when I went vegan.

That’s good to know, I get awfully bloated too.

Follow Dr Alan Desmond on Instagram as I'd see his course with the Happy Pear. He also has a book. He's a plant based gastroenterologist

Sadly I don’t know if it’s possible for everyone who has IBS.

However, I thought I’d never be able to go full vegan due to my Low FODMAP dietary restrictions. I tried so many things as I have had IBS for years, but I feel very fortunate that don’t really get symptoms anymore. The only things that still bother me are baked beans/haricots. I can eat garlic, onion, all other beans and lentils, and everything else that used to cause me problems now.

For me, what worked was trying Symprove, along with starting to then eat the widest variety of nutritious prebiotic plant-based foods (veg, fruit, grains etc) to improve my microbiome!

I still take Symprove every morning. I was really sceptical (but also desperate!), as I’d tried loads of capsule/powder probiotics before that had had zero effect. I’m not an expert, but I think the fact Symprove is a liquid means that it goes straight to your gut and doesn’t get destroyed by your stomach acid… Or something along those lines!

The only thing is that it’s expensive and not available on the NHS. So it’s a lot of money to spend when you have no way or knowing whether it will help you or not. And while I know two other people who have really benefited, I’ve read plenty of reviews from other IBS sufferers who it hasn’t worked for.

I don’t have any association with the company btw, I just feel so lucky to have found something that has been really life changing for me and thought it might be worth sharing.
